Women Wearing Pyjamas in Public ~ Right or Wrong ?
Wearing Pyjamas in Public
Is it now becoming commonplace in the UK for British women to go out without bothering to get washed or even dressed ?
I had a fairly shocking experience the other day and I photographed it . . .
A week of snow meant I’d not used my car for a week so I felt it needed a run. I took it down the Laceby Bypass and called in at Morrisons Supermarket - for hand-soap not food I hasten to add ![]()
I was simply staggered to see a woman walking round the supermarket at 11am on a Sunday wearing her pyjamas and a dressing gown

A Couple of Modern British Women ?

Not to be reproduced anywhere without written permission
I have heard of this before but I’ve never actually witnessed it. Liverpool became famous a while ago when schools started banning mothers who turned up in nightwear to bring their kids to school. Also, a while ago there was a newspaper story of Tesco’s Supermarket banning people from their stores who wear still in pyjamas !!
I’ve done some cursory research and it looks like going out without dressing seems to be something women do a lot more than men.
It seems a lot of women take their kids to school without bothering to get washed or dressed and as we see her - go to the shops !
This truly staggers me, the decline in standards simply beggars belief - I mean, how long does it take to get dressed.
Clearly people are simply too idle to get washed and dressed in the morning, have they any pride at all - surely not !
It does seem to be the ultimate in Chav behaviour
I wonder how widespread this is ?
I don’t normally go to Morrisons (for those outside the UK it’s a lower to mid-level supermarket) so I don’t know whether this is something which happens a lot, I fear it might be as I appeared to be the only one staring aghast at the woman.
I’d be very interested to hear if anybody else has experienced people who go out in public in the pyjamas
I can honestly say I was shocked to see it - am I right to be shocked or is this just a fact of modern life in Britain now - is the photograph above an example of modern British Women !?
Yours in astonishment,
Rod

Yes Rod .
As an infants’ teacher I saw this many times. It annoyed me as a young unmarried teacher; it annoyed me even more as a young mother teacher, as I had been up and getting a baby and a toddler ready and myself and was still in school looking fabulous and working by 8;30am. And then at 9 am, young mums in jamas brought their children to school and told me it is so they can go back to bed when they go home. My boys would have been hugely embarrassed if I had turned up in jamas.
I absolutely hate this. My mother would never even have left the house without her hair being done and looking smart . Me neither ! Sorry rant over. grrrrrrr ……

Hi Rod.
I too witnessed this disgusting behavior at Tesco,s in Market Rasen, I was refueling my car when two girls wearing dressings gowns and slippers walked in off the street past the filling station and into the store, they bought a bottle of milk and walked back again, thankfully I wasnt near enough to tell if they had washed but I wouldnt think so they looked quite ridiculous, obviously the Tesco ban has not reached Market Rasen yet.
If I had been in the main store I would most certainly have complained to the manager.
Regards Dave.

Dave,
I can’t imagine anybody who has the lack of self-esteem to even bother putting some clothes on has bothered to wash !!
I’m pleased I’m not the only one appalled by this, I still can’t believe that nowadays a woman is happy to get out of bed and go out unwashed and undressed, what’s happened to standards, pride, self-respect and straight forward common decency.
Looking at this I’m beginning to think it may be commonplace Dave . . .

Rod

Rod, it happens over here too! I think its more of a “Look at me” statement. It is a wee bit strange to see folk out in their pyjamas and dressing gowns at all hours of the day, I often wonder if they bother cleaning their houses either.

Rod,
The modern world we live in seems to produce people who have a lazy outlook on life. Those that do such thing are really showing what a low standard of self esteem they have. The thing is are they bothered and I think the answer is no. My daughter would never have got out the house looking like that but I think she had a bit more pride in her appearance. I know of someone not far from myself who gets up in the morning stays in her pyjamas takes the kids to school and walks around in them all day. The thing is I have seen her the next day doing exactly the same in the same pyjamas. whats happened to their personal hygiegne.

Faing,
thanks for this report, really appreciated, once again I feel as though I’m in the dark as to what is happening.
I can’t imagine they’re bothering to clean their houses somehow . . .
Do you think it’s ‘look at me’ Faing?
I can’t help thinking it’s a complete abandonment of all self-respect and consideration of what others think

Graham,
we’re singing from the same hymn sheet here I think.
Perhaps I’m a dinosaur, I won’t leave the house with having a bath, I never go anywhere without shaving and I never wear the same clothes twice without washing them.
I really do wonder what’s going on in this country and I can’t help but laugh when people ask me why I’m single . . .

Ouch , you talk as if all women do this.
I am totally co-ordinated for every occasion , hats, bags, scarves, shoes, bling, coats and would never be seen out in my jamas . hair done and facial once a month.
Plus, my lovely husband would be devatsated if I did . What are their partners thinking ?
My hub would certainly SAY something.

As a postman I see it far too often, especially on Westcliff estate (Scunthorpes’ version of Nunsthorpe), some of the locals just don’t seem to dress “properly” for much of the week, except for signing on day

Hi Rod,
I’m thinking this might be a seasonal thing - part of an hibernation adaptation and perhaps the furry coat (aka dressing gown) and under layers are only sloughed off when spring arrives and the cave contents are pushed out the entrance.
It’s most important to maintain body temperature during this time lest the other denizens of the layers pack up and leave, a la Thomas a Becket dead at the altar.
Judging from the trolley and facing cabinet the cleaning departments had not been disturbed. No sense scaring those invertebrates and getting them moving about too much..
I’m about to go shopping some 50 miles away at Mt Gambier; With only a few very hot days so far, I’ll be on the lookout.
Scratchingly yours,
Donald.

I once assisted a vet who was wearing his striped PJ’s under his surgical gown - but I suppose in an emergency at 3am anything goes? and he dared to moan about my pink slippers!

Hi, Rod… I went with The North East Lincolnshire Pipeband to the late Jimmy Bloomer`s abode on the Willows to play some tunes outdoors. It seems a lot of people are `jimmy-d` up on that estate and walk around in slippers ! It was early evening too.

Are these “MORRI-MARTIONS” ?
In the USA they are known as WALL-MART IONS !
Google or Youtube may offer some truely mind blowing photos.
The E.T. on the right may also sleep in socks and shoes too/
The one on the left may have borrowed the others slippers, cant really tell at 200% enlarged.
Either way with snow and ice everywhere not the most ideal foot wear for shopping.
Personally i find these situations quite sad to come across.

Rod,
here in Spain in the winter its common to see elderly spanish with dressing gowns on at the market even near to lunch time, cant decide if they have just got up on they cant afford a coat. The spanish in general dont get up early, the market doesn,t get going tll well gone 9am,all the other hot countries I,ve lived in folk get up early before it gets to hot.How ever its different strokes for different folks.V at my local primary school in Suffolk its frowned upon if the mums are not smartly dressed and made up,most probably go on to work after dropping the children off. Thanks for all these responses folks, it seems as though it is a fairly widespread trend nowadays.
I suppose the real danger is that the more of it that’s seen the more ‘acceptable’ (to some at least) it may appear to be and that will no doubt lead to more people walking around outside in their pyjamas
I still keep thinking about the fact that in Morrisons supermarket the other people I saw there at the time didn’t seem to bat an eyelid.
I may risk a trip to Asda one mid-morning as see what’s happening there . . .

Have you noticed how sadly they never seem to be vivacious ladies in sexy negligees? Wooly seen-better-days dressing gowns and grubby thick PJs seem to be the order of the day
Please let us know if you spot a young lady in a see-through skimpy nighty on a warm August morning - Sexist? Yes I’m afraid it probably is but for the ladies out there I have seen elderly gentlemen in equally grubby nightware and slippers in Tescos but it was 3am!

It happens here in Canada too, or at least in Ontario. For a time there was a problem with teenagers showing up for class in pajamas. It just mystifies me. I can’t even stand wearing mine around my house after I get out of bed for the day. I don’t do a full scale makeover everytime I leave the house but if someone doesn’t even care enough to brush their hair and teeth and get dressed in the morning I’m not sure what it says about them…..

Lynne,
I’d heard of mothers wearing their PJ’s to bring their kids to school but never of the children wearing them - I’m lost for words - what on earth is going on in people’s heads - are we in a desperate race to the bottom !?

Rod
