Wold Newton Church ~ History ~ Invading Danes !

All Hallows, or All Saints, Church in Wold Newton is a beautiful building in a lovely Lincolnshire Wolds setting.
It also has a past which stretches back many years

All Hallows is a fairly remote Wolds church which is beautifully located and clearly well cared for and tended.
It is a relatively modern rebuild, carried out by James Fowler in 1862.

The church has a much earlier past though and the original building which stood on the site was sacked by the Danes. There were also 20 ancient burial urns found in a tumulus in the 1800s.
There is little left after the 1862 rebuild although there are a few ancient bits such as Norman brackets, a few 13th century pieces of carving including a Norman capital ( carving the decorates the top of a pillar or column) which was originally in Bardney Abbey !

The font is 14th century and is inscribed with a prayer to John and Johanna Curtys who originally donated it to the church

Wold Newton is also known as Newton Wold or

Wold Newton Church

We would encourage anybody who has any information on this church, or its predecessors, it’s contents past or present, anything historical or anecdotal - in fact anything of interest to leave a comment and help us build as much information as possible and collate it all in one easily accessible place

Many thanks in advance for any information you can share
All the best
