Rod,

J.G.Hall says, "<i>The tower contains a ring of five bells, which bear the following inscriptions respectively:-

1...Robert Sawyer C.W. 1741
2...Thos Adam Rector Great Benefactor 1742 Tosh Bell C.W.
3...Thos Adam Rector and Good Benefactor
4...Venite Exultemus Domino 1705
5...That Evel ---- Thinkes</i>"

While Rector Adam seems to want all to be aware of his benificence, I'm a slightly puzzled re 'C.W.' Was it the bellmaker's initials? If so, who or what is 'Tosh Bell'?
The four dashes are the best I can do to represent J.G.H.'s continuous line. What a curious incription!

Incidentally, in trying to get a continuous line I discovered a short-cut that I was unaware of:

'Ctrl' and repeated presses of '-' or '+' zooms out and in; or at least it does on my keyboard! Handy if you are visually challenged.

Regards,
Neville

Robsmum,
thanks for the comment and welcome to the site. I have indeed visited Alkborough and it's awaiting final research and writing up so it'll be on the site at some point.
Kind regards

Dear Rod - Have found your site very useful for our meanderings in Lincolnshire - loved Brocklesby Park and Winteringham especially. Just wondered if you've ever ventured to Alkborough just further on from Winteringham? It's a lovely village and the locals were really friendly and helpful. Alkborough flats is a great place for walking and bird watching and you can meander to the Trent Falls to the confluence of the rivers or round to Whitton village. There is a 12th century turf maze in the village itself (which is directed by signs for Julian's Bower) where in turn there are great views over the flats. The local church is worth a visit as is the local tea rooms.
Regards, robsmum

Chris,

I knew you would know about it but it was just a light-hearted approach to encouraging Rod to 'do' this area.
The answer was of course Winteringham and Rod has duly obliged with a fresh thread today :)

Rod,

Well there's a coincidence! ;) Excuse the latest clue as we overlapped a bit. JG Hall does have a drawing of the knight's effigy if you would like it?

Neville
