I guess the TV series was set between the late 20s and early 1930s with the shows drawing on stories and books rather than mimicking an exact book so. As to money, Bertie was blissfully unaware of it as he lived the life of a gentleman thanks to inherited family wealth. This also explains running story lines of why he had to 'keep in with' certain Aunts who had no children of their own !
