Why Do People Watch the X Factor

This Saturday sees the unwelcome return of the massive hit TV series The X Factor.
Yet another talent show in the endless stream of drivel that passes for programming on television today.
Why do people watch it and why ?
I may have found the answer …

Regulars may recall that I am on record in passing comment on Simon Cowell’s money spinner in the even-handed, unbiased and well balanced article I wrote called The X Factor Sucks :)
You’ll not be watching it then sound the derision laden voices from the back !
Well I might - you see something’s come up

Dannii Minogue Basic Instinct Dress no underwear

Danni Minogue
About to do a Basic Instinct !

This picture graced the front cover of The News of the World colour magazine and made me think perhaps I ought not to be so judgemental.
The lovely Danni Minogue ( sister of Kylie Minogue )is no stranger to this site having stripped to her underwear for us !
But no I thought - be strong - don’t be so easily swayed but then further news of another presenter …

Cheryl Cole Boobs cleavage

Cheryl Cole
The talented singer from Girls Aloud

Once again Cheryl Cole is also a previous guest on the site, twice no less with here popular beat group Girls Aloud !
Firstly in a (genuinely) serious debate on the St Trinian’s Schoolgirl Uniforms and then performing the theme tune which, annoyingly, I really like.

I am still mystified by the huge appeal of the show and worryingly I am advised that it runs till christmas (surely not) I do hope it doesn’t clash with Big Brother :)

The whole nation will virtually grind to a halt this Saturday night - will you be one of those grinding ?
Will I be grinding (easy tiger) or grinding my teeth.
Are the producers so stupid that they think 2 hot cleavage flashing chicks will get people to watch the show :)
And the final question …
Are there fathomable limits to the depth of my shallowness ?

    Rod,

Will we be watching xfactor?…… no.

Are there fathomable limits to the depth of my shallowness? …. no.

Shouldn’t you be out chasing women instead of sitting at home watching them…. there must be an unappreciated cleavage somewhere in need of your attention :) We have a friend who watches nothing but Big Brother and various so called talent shows….. at the end of an average week we have very little to talk about, we’ve even tried sports but neither of us are terribly well up on that either….. so the conversation generally makes it way to cosmetics and men, both being light frothy subjects :)

I gave up watching women on TV when babe Bucking Bronco and Lucy Pinder finished on Nuts TV

Funny you should mention sport as I have prepared a sports post on the Olympics for Saturday !

I too will not be watching Xfactor because Matron says we’ll all get too excitable with Dannii and Cheryl on the screen at once which will lead to heavy sedation once again !

    Confession: I …watched…. the X factor tonight …..drawn in unfairly of course….

Please may I be granted forgiveness and pitied for the haunting snippets that keep flashing into my mind, despite all efforts to blank them.

Whilst I can often glaze and instantly forget many a meaningful documentary or historical drama, the power of such inane shows as X factor have a disturbing effect that can linger for days.

Yours a perturbed Little Witchlet. x

ps. Could you suggest, Woe, a lotion or potion for such a malady as this.

    welcome back :)
You’ll not be the only one watching it !
I wonder if it’s like some soap operas, that is to say nobody admits to watching them yet clearly over 10 million do.
Sadly I missed the show - no doubt I’ll be able to catch up with a rerun or X Factor Extra on ITV 56 !

Well done for comig out of the closet :)
    Regards

    LW,

Get straight back in the closet… the outside world is no place for a little witchlet :) There are indeed potions to assist in the purging of Xfactor etc and you should waste no time in applying them to your lens, the thicker the better :)

In future try to restrict your viewing to subjects that expand the mind like beach volley ball and Lord Byron the Yeti, as we RC bloggers do. Of course you should bare in mind dear Colin and his highness Daniel, Lord Strut-Worthy of Craig, both of which you may incorporate into your daily mind expansion plan :)

p.s. good to see you back and in top form!

    LW,

A closet thinker eh, not a bad idea as there’s no one to argue with (take it you are alone in that closet? :) )

    Rod,

Intriguing site. I like it, and thought I’d post because the discovery of your site from my browsing was directly linked to the return of X-factor.

Now, let’s be clear, I hate the X-factor. In fact, I pretty much dislike all this kind of TV, much of which my good lady wife enjoys (I reserve my most vociferous feelings for Eastenders and Most Haunted). None of it has anything to do with sport, culture, motorbikes or attractive women, ergo it’s a waste of time, thoroughly depressing and to be avoided at all costs. As a result of this, I have plenty of time to stumble through the internet and on Saturday evening last week was doing so brought on by the return of X-factor. I found a link to your site from my motorbike forum and bingo!

    Things to dislike about X-factor:
    - the sobbing hard luck stories (is that just me?!)
    - the inherent and implied suggestion that appearing on the programme is some kind of achievement
    - the false hope it offers to people who clearly have no talent

    The flip side:
    - the Aussie sheila and the Geordie lass

Anyway, that’s that. Quite cathartic actually.

    I’ll be back.

    Thanks,
    Adrian

    Hi Adrian
thanks for taking the time to comment, very much appreciated and welcome to the site.

I have to agree Ade, it’s not for me either ! I think if it was a genuine talent show then perhaps that might give it some credibility but are we saying that those people on screen are the finest examples of musical talent this country has to offer ?

It’s all so false as well, as you say the sugary stories the manufactured reaction from the crowd etc etc
I could go on (and frequently do)

Thanks again Adrian, pleased you found the site intriguing and hope to see you back soon
    All the best
    Rod

PS. I’m preparing a page of motogp grid girls to go live soon so a return trip should be worthwhile ;)
