Whitechapel TV Show ~ A New Series Coming ?

I don’t know whether any of you saw the recent 3 part TV show Whitechapel. It followed a modern day Jack the Ripper copycat and was, in my opinion, quite well done.

I have to make clear how my TV barometer works here, 99% of what is televised is ghastly to me, that is not to say it is and I’m right - it just does nothing for me.
Therefore, when something is ‘watchable’ it comes as such a surprise I may well give it more credit than it’s due !

Rupert Penry-Jones in WhitechapelAnyhoo, back to Whitechapel. It featured Rupert Penry-Jones as DI Joseph Chandler who seems to be doing a fine job of late, I know him from The 39 Steps remake and Spooks. Whilst the characters were all a little clichéd it was well acted and well shot - a solid pleasant viewing experience for crime and mystery fans.
In fairness, of the many detective based shows that have been made for television few are really outstanding, most are simply relaxing ‘Sunday Night’ type shows.
Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Morse are exceptions of course, they being superb !

After the second episode I certainly felt they had ’series characters’ on their hands but the nature of the tale meant it would come to an absolute conclusion, as well they tied the show name to the story. This I thought was a shame as there is undoubtedly room for a new quality crime series on TV so I thought this was, perhaps, a missed opportunity.

However, the gripping conclusion to the last episode, whilst finishing off that particular story, left it well and truly open for a series return I thought.
I hope they do so although I think quality drama is expensive to produce and is being cut back savagely at the moment.
Presumably a return will depend much on worldwide sales and viewing figures etc.

If you saw it let us know what you thought of it and the characters involved - would they stand as good enough for a potential long-running series ?

my husband and i thought the series of whitechapel was really fantastic and deserves to have further series made. the police team are just starting to work together. they were brilliant very serious yet with a touch of humour. itv could have a big hit with this a lot better than the rubbish that sometimes is screened. COME ON ITV START A NEW SERIES…PLEASE…..PLEASE…PLEASE…

    Hi Sandra
thanks for the comment and welcome to the site.
Needless to say, I agree with you entirely. I think they have all the ingredients for a long-running series that would only improve as it went on.

Let’s hope they see sense and remember that not everybody is interested in programmmes like
“When Big Brother Rejects Change Their Socks” and the like !

I do know that the TV companies look at sites like this, as do all the major newspapers so comments like yours can actually make a dfference Sandra
Thanks again for taking the time
    All the best
    Rod
