When Should a Woman Dress Her Age ?

There’s an old English saying: Mutton Dressed as Lamb !
Used mainly by women to describe other women in my experience so don’t blame the men !
I’m on the side of if you’ve got it’s OK to flaunt it really but at some point it has to stop.
The latest pictures of Madonna, aged 50, start to make you wonder
When Should a Woman Dress her Age ?

Madonna in fishnet tights and white thong This is a promo picture of the singer released today to promote her new album Hard Candy. She’s obviously in great shape, especially given her age, but do you get to a point when it’s just not quite ’seemly’ ?

The picture on the bottom came out a week or so ago as part of an advertising campaign for Louis Vuitton, I nearly blogged it then. There were some great shots of her looking both sexy and stylish but then the one below was released …

I’m obviously no prude but that certainly isn’t seemly, not at any age for somebody who presumably wishes to be taken seriously.

It’s not just a question for women of course, I’ve considered the same thing myself, when should a man dress his age.
Having cleared that up it still begs the questions: when does it get too much ?

There’s no doubt the she’s in better shape than many half her age but possibly now is the time to tone it down a little - growing old disgracefully is something I heartily endorse but you’ve got to know when it’s time not to quit but turn down the dial a little.

Looking at the two pictures I think she can, just, get away with the first one but the legs akimbo one below is more porn star than rock star and a mistake in my opinion.
All that said they both achieved what they were intended to, massive amounts of free publicity.

I never knew of her new album, did you ? Well, everybody reading this now does …

If I look like that at 50, I will be wearing red knickers and fishnets.

I think Madonna’s the exception to the rule. She’ll be publicly gyrating well into her 70s just you watch :P Personally I don’t find it tasteful when women of any age…ahem ..display themselves in mass media as blatantly as above, (what AM I doing on this site? :P ) but that’s just me. I think there is a small positive though in the case of Madonna; today to be typically beautiful you have to be young; so some older women may see her as a role model for beauty having no age limit…but then again…Madonna…just look at those biceps!

Hey guess what…it’s snowing here in Glasgow!

    Hi Babette
thanks for the comment and welcome to the site, hope to see you return.
You make a good point - if you make the effort to look so good then why hide it ?
    All the best

    Lucy,
once again good points and tthanks for the flip-side of the coin.
There is a good argument, as yoou point out, that she is flying the flag for women who society doesn’t regard as ‘young’

what AM I doing on this site?
    Showing extraordinarily good taste :)

As to the biceps she’s probably a regular visitor to this site and is on the Daniel Craig Workout :)
Wrap up well, no snow here just wind and rain :(
    Cheers

    Rod,

The top shot isn’t complimentary in our opinion at any age although we wouldn’t dispute the fact that she’s very toned …. are those Daniel Craig’s thighs? The second shot … well who would be able to guess her age…. pity the director insisted on such a cheap pose especially considering it’s for Louis Vuitton (lovely bag btw), it’s just not part of their brand in our view.

When our numbers roll in, there’ll be LV bags and red knickers for all the Witches, but that’s a secret, don’t tell them will you… :)

In good shape for 51 years yes. But not a classy pose by any means at any age.

you’re clearly in the ‘if you’ve got it flaunt it’ camp !
There’s much to be said for it, a good message tyo all out there
If you have it flaunt it before it’s too late - one day it will have to stop
Unless you’re Madonna of course, it looks like she’s a unique case - in more ways than one :)

Madonna has NEVER been accused of having a sense of decorum. Did we think that would change as she got older? Looks like a broad who is having trouble accepting who she is.

she’s always played the contoversial publicity card to the max’
I understand that, it’s made her a fortune but does she still need to do it ?
She certainly splits camps right down the middle.

Well her non-invasive facial surgery has turned out a treat so she is a great advert if you have loads of money which most people don’t! I just have issues with her scary arms! I wonder if she and Guy had arm wrestles which he lost so his pride was hurt and then he decided to divorce her!!!

    Tigs,
thanks fo rthe comment and welcome to the site - hope you’ll return.
Looking at the arms on the two of them I reckon she’d take him as well !
She probably ‘unmanned’ him - you’re right :)

I think Madonna looks great for her age, although I think there comes a point when a woman should dress her age. I know when I’m her age I certainly wont wear clothes I do. Certain styles suit certain age groups/figures and there’s nothing wrong with that. For most women I think they become more aware in their thirties. I know a woman at college who is 34 she just recently started wearing less revealing clothes and looks so much better, Ironically younger too.

Legs akimbo ??? People can have their ARMS akimbo-it means having your hands on your hips, so that your elbows are pointing outwards-but it would be very difficult to have your legs like this . Many people seem to think that it means standing with legs apart, but it doesn’t-it should only ever be used of someone’s arms :)

    legs akimbo

quote “A body position in which the feet are kept together or close to one another while the knees bent and spread widely appart. Usually adopted while the person is sitting, reclining or lying on their back.

The pose is very sexually provocative and is often assumed naturally by women during intercourse or as a visual prompt to initiate sex.

The term is derived from ‘akimbo’ - a similar posture involving the arms - the hands are placed on ones hips with elbows bent and pointing outward, thus forming the same diamond shape.” unquote

Well, they say that 50 is the new 30! For my part, I think that if a lady has the figure and looks, then why shouldn’t she dress younger than her years? I know a few ladies in their 50’s, and do look really good in tight jeans, heels and short skirts. As far as I know, there is no law to say thay when a woman reaches 50, she MUST wear ankle length skirts, blouse and cardy and horrendous tan flat shoes. As they say, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it”
