When Should a Man Start to Dress His Age
I am considering something at the moment that could be life changing.
Should I start dressing my age ?
I’m a firm believer in you’re as young as you look and feel that said you still have to be realistic. It is often a charge levelled at women in the style of mutton dressed as lamb etc that they wear clothes too young for them.
Once again I feel that if they have the figure for it then go for it.
But of course, there is still a cut-off point when a mini skirt and crop top is going to look ridiculous not matter how good your figure.
So is it time for a new wardrobe, something more reflective of my age ?
A while ago I was really going to go for a whole new look, a flamboyant Byronesque image mixed with my own ideas (think Russell Brand meets Daniel Craig for a rough idea)
This was a serious thought and something which appealed to me, the problem was hair !
Thankfully I still have all mine but I wanted to grow it long again.
Some years ago it used to be half-way down my back, I wouldn’t go that far but I wanted shoulder length hair !
I didn’t feel I could go through the long and terrible period when you don’t have long hair you just need a haircut !
So that put pay to that is did issues with wardrobe such as Thomas Sabo Jewellery.
Anyhoo, I’m now thinking of dressing my age a little more. The chick jeans, and in comes a more mature look such as Pierce Brosnan in Acquascutum.
In reality I’m thinking sensible trousers, but no cords of course, and end to jeans etc.
Sensible dress shirts tweed style jackets etc.
I have already made start on something for the new image but that’s for another post.
As is maturity - do I need to grow up mentally as well ?
-
Suggestions for what I should or should not do
What I should or should not wear at my age
Are all gratefully received
All the best
Rod

Rod,
We’re prepared to bet Pierce still looks good in jeans so stick with them….. for a man of your age the waist band should sit nicely around the chest
Now, just yesterday the Witches were admiring young Novak Djokovic in his tennis finery…. later they showed him wearing a tux and we were reminded how scrumptious men look in black and white. Women old and young would probably agree that this timeless look will always be a hit.
After a good deal of soul searching, the Witches have ruled out the kaftan look for you. In future you must look to the Robert Redford ‘Out of Africa’ garb or keep to the DC Bond dress code…… skirts of any kind should be avoided even when in the Highlands
Of course a trip to the Riviera would show you what our stylish continental cousins are sporting…. all you need is a ticket and yes, definitely some sandals!

p.s. growing up mentally… this is uncharted territory for us and as we don’t know what’s there, we couldn’t possibly advise it

Rod, I don’t think there is such a thing as “dressing your age” anymore, its a concept we have grown up with and taken for granted but I can’t see today’s teenagers understanding what it’s about and considering it seriously. I think all you really have to consider is your dignity and respect for others, at work obviously (although that doesn’t apply to you
) and when you’re socialising- not to be an embarrassment to your friends. Furthermore always take into account what’s appropriate to where you’re going and what you’re doing, e.g. don’t play a round of golf in a lemon yellow outfit and drop in for a sweet sherry on the way home at a Grimsby dockside pub

I’m all for black and white, indeed it was to be the theme to the stylistic homage to Byron.
I’m thinking more beige and tweed now
You’ll forgive me for not taking stylistic tips from our friends abroad !
Whatever drastic changes there may be no will be as dramatic as wearing sandals - I might be getting older but I still have som epride

rest assured I’ll still cut a dash.
Unfortunately I’m bound to embarrass my friends and those around me, that’s inevitable although it would never be in a sartorial sense.
As to dressing for work, I was putting books on eBay at £4.99 yesterday wearing casual clothes that retail at over £300 - something in that equation doesn’t really add up !
You’re point about changing times and fashions is spot on, things are a lot different nowadays but is there enough latitude there to allow for my chick jeans ?

Rod, I think you can get away with the chick jeans but you definately are overdressed for bookselling! Its a good thing your prospective purchasers can’t see you’re wearing £300 of casual clothes or they would think that you’re making too much profit on the books at £4.99, listen to the voice of experience
Why do you think most bookshop owners look so scruffy (apologies to the exceptions), its a deliberate ploy, at least that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!
p.s. there’s nothing wrong with corduroy

I could be sat here wearing only socks and I’d still be overdressed for bookselling if this weeks sales were anything to go by
It’s quite frightening sometimes what clothes add up to, hence my change of tact, no more wasteful purchases !
I’ll spend the money on gas and electric instead
As to corduroy I fully understand it’s the staple of the entire bookselling world (apart from the successful London dealers who wear Farah slacks) but I’m not quite ready to go that far.
Chick jeans to corduroy trousers is a big leap in one full step and when one wears chick jeans one has to be careful taking big leaps or indeed full steps

PS: I may stretch to a tweed jacket with leather elbow patches !

Rod,
You’ll forgive me for not taking stylistic tips from our friends abroad … no we won’t !
I could be sat here wearing only socks and I’d still be overdressed for bookselling … a real sartorial faux pas but undoubtedly a crowd pleaser in small outlets where all other forms of enticement have failed

WoE, You’ve given me an idea for sunday’s Horncastle Summer Fayre when everything is supposed to be on a 60s theme, I could be a hippy for the day which wouldn’t require clothes, I would wear a flower in my hair if only I had enough hair

Dino,
Remember the kaftan ensemble rejected by our host? Well we strongly suggest you adopt this look for the summer fayre, flower or no flower
The delicate disposition of the town’s residents and the twining association in particular, should not be under estimated

Rod,
Stick with what you are comfortable in and what you think looks good.
I am sure someone will let you know if you start looking ridiculous
As to the hair, I think going long would be ideal and then maybe the change of clothing will follow.

I’ve always thought what you say is the right way to think but what if I keep thinking it for too long.
Thankfully looking like a mere youth means I have a bit of room
It’s nice to know there are people out there who will tell me the truth, at my age I feel a bit like a woman and probabl;y only want to hear flattering comments
If I could get the long hair quickly then I definately would, one last fling !
I even considered hair extensions
