What Scares Men the Most ? Top Ten

The results of a poll by a magazine asking young to youngish British men what they feared the most gave a telling Top 10.
We all know men have hidden depths so the list will be full of prophetic things - world peace, starvation, third world debt and the like …

Yeah right say all the women - and as usual the ladies are right ;)
Here is the list

The Top 10 Things that Scare Guys the Most

1. Football team being relegated
2. Proposing to girlfriend
3. Losing looks - hair - ageing
4. Being made to look stupid in front of mates
5. Being rejected when asking a girl on a date
6. Small children and babies
7. Amy Winehouse
8. Meeting girlfriend’s parents
9. Free falling
10. Large insects

It’s clearly a strange list and is also clearly age centric. I don’t personally identify with most of them, except perhaps Amy Winehouse !
Things that bother both men and women surely change with age and circumstance.
Teenagers for example are less bothered about dying or paying bills etc.
Some things must remain constant though - namely anything to do with the opposite sex.

I’ve been thinking of what scares me and I’m pretty much stumped really. I tend not to be unduly bothered about much. Personally if something does come up, or may come up, that could cause worry then I tend to do something about it.
Being scared of things or worrying about them is debilitating I believe and simply makes the problem worse.

I thought about doing my own list but figured it would be a bit jokey due to lack of content but now as I write this I realise that this has not stopped me writing on this blog before :)
So here goes …

Bad things happening to people I care about
Walking passed wedding dress shops
Buying razor blades
Making the most of my time
Website problems
Hedgehog welfare
My kitchen garden
The car going in for MOT
Not letting people down and doing what I say I’ll do
The price of cheese and fish
!

How much different are the things women worry about ?
What do other men worry about ?
Should I have more to worry about than my list suggests ?

Have a worry free weekend
All the best
Rod

    Rod,
A great post, you highlight some real concerns for men everywhere :)
It’s not easy being a bloke and I’ve always said it!

Rod, you’ve reminded me of something said a while ago which I think is relevant here, I belong to an art group and whilst we work there’s often a bit of chatter going on ( dare I say, mainly between the ladies) and one particular week I happened to be the only man present.

A couple of the ladies were discussing their problems and worries, one of them said “men don’t worry about anything do they” and then turned on me (quietly minding my own business) and asked “do men worry about anything ever?” Caught off my guard and not really having been listening to what was said beforehand I just said “of course they do!”

The point being, I was very surprised that the ladies should have that opinion of men, that they don’t worry about anything. Having considered it since, I think this misconception may have come about because men don’t talk about what “scares” them, for fear of being ridiculed by their mates or worse still of looking feeble in the eyes of women. Does anyone agree with me?

I think much could be generational opinions, men meant to be the strong silent type etc may give the idea that they don’t worry.
I certainly agree that being scared of things may give the appearance of weakness in men.

It is certainly different for men and women.
Imagine a woman bursting into tears at work because she’s worried about something or the pressure of the job - most people would accept it.

Imagine a man doing it ….
    Cheers

    Dino,

Never concern yourself about being seen as feeble….. more likely get used to it since most women think most men are at one time or another feeble. Sadly it’s other men who might object and who cares what they think anyway :)

Our advice to you is make plenty of female friends and join in with the conversation. Perhaps all they will judge you as will be honest and sensitive, two traits by the way that women generally admire.

    Rod,

We told ourselves not to go there…. just let him have his say we thought and perhaps later all the women will comment and we will enjoy the read. Sadly they must all be doing far more interesting things like slaving away in kitchens and laundries, polishing grates etc :)

    So then …

    1. Thank goodness for your list of scary notions… for a minute there we thought mankind was really a lost cause :)

    2. Women don’t see people bursting into tears as a weakness, regardless of gender. So then if we caught the manly Daniel Craig in floods of tears we would, being the motherly type, attempt to comfort him… the possibility of this we might add, comforts us on these cold wintery nights and in case he’s watching, please let him rest assured there’s always a place for him at the Coven :) So the problem lies with men fluffing up their fighting feathers and accusing their own kind. Looking at the top list we are left in no doubt how the average young male thinks as if we ever had any doubts. Older men with children might give a different view especially if they’ve never heard of Amy Winehouse :)

    3. Woman are afraid of :

    a) the health and welfare of their children and loved ones
    b) attack
    c) losing their looks and being swapped for a younger model
    d) having to take care of the older generation as well as the juniors
    e) not being taken seriously in the job market
    f) never being able to put themselves first and feeling guilty if they do
    g) plus all the other things listed by Rod :)

I’m sure you’d derive more from comforting DC than he would :)
If James Bond were to to break down with emotion let’s hope it doesn’t happen as he’s about to disarm a nuclear bomb and save the world.
It is enough to make a man cry when you see what he does to those Aston Martins though :)

Your list is an excellent one and I think there is probably as much difference between age groups as there is different sexes.
The young tend to be immortal, devoid of life’s heavy responsibilities and also inhabit a world in which little else but themselves seem to exist.
I guess it’s best to enjoy it whilst you can - it doesn’t last for long !

    All the best

    Rod,

I’m sure you’d derive more from comforting DC than he would …. now that deserves a virtual slap, how dare you :) we’d rather hoped it might end up the highlight of his life. Mind you we wouldn’t want to be seen to be taking advantage or appearing shallow, so we’d humbly settle for a friendly hug and some cocoa :)

If James Bond were to break down with emotion let’s hope it doesn’t happen as he’s about to disarm a nuclear bomb and save the world. …. well quite but let’s face it he’s the type who could weep buckets and still keep a cool head in situations like that, very much like a stalwart woman or indeed your good self :)
