I am now in my 40's - Having recently lost a fair amount of weight was pleased to be wearing a uk size 8. On moving house I found a favourite skirt that I had kept from my teens in a size 10. I was so excited that i could wear this lovely skirt again... but on trying it on could not even get it over my hips :-( That was obviously a real size 10 wear as i am a real 12.

Apologise for the typo errors in my last comment. I thought this was a great article and so were comments made in the inconsistency in sizing over time. Ironically the confusion for those women who have hit larger sizes by sizes contracting in just 18 months are the ones who know they are overweight so leaving them with tight fits or limited options untill they loose weight and better fit the barely usable clothes is a frustrating adjustment time. In a way it's a motivator to loose weight, but on the otherhand finding enough of a range to fit properly in the meantime-bulging out of clothes or swimming in tents of a limited array doesn't encourage getting out and about that helps loose weight. Most fashions of a wider array had previously covered a genorous enough 18. Ok the 18 is a true 18 now, but they didn't extend the range for a proper 20. By flattering the ordinarily size range still a bit they are still deceiving the women who's weight is creeping up, just when it's easiest to fix. The shrivelling of sizes has been a lot more consisent in mens clothes, recession, plus caucasian men will be perplexed but just go up a size shaking their head and most not that vain generally buying only when out of clothes. The few vain ones will panic and diet despite being in a healthy enough weight range already. Then the influx of ethnic groups where the men are much shorter and thinner are made to feel better as they'd love to be bigger and would have been really cringinging in seeing how small they would have seemed prior to recession size shrivelling when in their countries sizing was more accurately fitted to mesurements or if anything sizing was even more skimp. I wonder when manufactorers of clothing will be forced to standardise sizing and stick to it?

Laura,
unfortunately there's no answer to that uqestion which is one of the problems of this ridiculous situation.
I myself had a hoodie printed with the site logo on recently and the print shop ordered different sized hoodies in for me to try because nobody knew which would fit - Medium, Large or Extra Large !!

The situation is very much worse for women of course as Vanity Sizing works in business terms so they're pushing it more and more.
Best of luck Laura

I was very confused, I haven't bought jeans in a while, and my old jeans are a 24" and they are all so tight now they are uncomfortable, since i have put on a little weight, so I started to go shopping for some new ones. but whenever I go to the store and try on a 24" they are all far too big. I found it very strange. but considering that 24" is much bigger than it used to be that makes sense now, why I would gain weight but still need to buy something that seems to be smaller size if you just look at the label.

I don't think just using women's waist size to judge is right!! Over resent decades the average women's waist size has dramatically increased, where as the average hip size has only increased by one inch. Yet the size charts are still using the old hip to waist ratio as the ratio of the hip to waist in the size guide. This means that if the clothes are to fit the average women then the waist has to be widened. If you were to compare the size of the hip measurments you would find that actually on the same piece of clothing where the waist is out by 3 or 4 inches the hip measurement might match the size it is meant to.

I have a big problem getting some clothes that fit. I find that since I seem to have a much smaller than average waist - an hourglass figure - I can look up the size and chose the one that matches perfectly. When I try it on the hips and bust fit perfectly... BUT The waist is too big.
I own a lot of clothes and I have measured them all and each one has come out as matching the size guide for hips and bust but not waist.

This all makes me think that rather than the clothes needing to have the waists made smaller, its the size guides need to have the waist measurement increased so that the guide matches the shape of an average woman. I say this despite the fact i would love the clothes to be made with smaller waists so I can stop having to either take everything thing in or wear belts.

The measurements I use are the ones given by the shops. All the shops I get my clothes from have measurements that are all within 0.5 inches of each other.

I realise this is an old article.

I have just bought clothes from a UK internet clothing company. I usually wear high street 10-12 but know full well this is ISO size 14. So, as I had never bought from this company before I chose my size from their size chart - a perfect size 14.

The two dresses arrived, I took them out and they looked a little big. I put them on and they were wrinkly all over. I placed them against a size 12 I have, and they were 4 inches too big. From this, I ascertain I am size 10 with their actual clothes, but if this is the case, then why advertise ISO sizings? They don't even offer a replacement service, only a return because 'wrong size', after I have HAD to pay postage (to an internet only company) :(

Thank you for this. As someone who is at their ideal weight on medical charts and a true US size 6-8 on old sizing charts, I hate getting the "skinny bitch" glares from sales clerks when asking if their store carries 00's. It is absurd that they even make a 00 now!

I would just like to say women come in all shapes and this, I feel has an effect as far as sizing is concerned. I am a pear shape and I could say I am a healthy size 8 real measurements, but my hips are a size 12 and a women who say is an apple is going to have completely different prportions.
I think the bottom line is(no pun intended) that you have to measure yourself and not rely on labels, although this is frustrating when trying to mail order which is how I shop now, sometimes I order three sizes, and although apparently pear is the supposed to be the common shape in uk, the waists are definitley getting bigger and buying jeans are a nightmare for the pear shape
