What Are the Best Things You Ever Did ?

What are the things in life you are most pleased you did or experienced ?
What all often talk about the mistakes we have made in life or the things we wish we had done but what are the things you actually have done which you look back on with the most satisfaction and pleasure ?

In thinking about this they probably come under all sorts of headings:
Sensible - extravagant - pleasurable - educational - beneficial etc

A while ago I did a post about 5 Things You Wish You’d Done so what about the things you are pleased you did ?

Well, for the earlier part of my life and in chronological order here are some of mine:

Served an Engineering Apprenticeship
Stood me in good stead for the rest of my life, subsequently working a lot allowed me to get a good start in life

Bought a Decent House in My Early Twenties
Comes under the category of sensible I guess but I don’t look at my house in financial terms I consider it my home - a place I’ve always felt happy in

Had a Life Threatening Illness
This seems strange to include in this list, especially as it was a living nightmare both at the time and for some years after but it was character building and I would not change it if I could - peculiar I know but true.

Got Married !
Although it did not last it was something I’m pleased I did and would not change if I could turn the clocks back - every man should get married at least once :)

Stand Completely on My Own Two Feet
Leaving a good job with guaranteed security for a completely uncertain way of life when you are master of your own destiny and rise or fall entirely by your own efforts and ideas brings a sense of both freedom and satisfaction.
Having to be neither grateful, reliant or beholden to anybody is truly liberating.

That takes me up to a few years ago, the rest and more recent history is perhaps for another post, lest this get overly long.

Why not share some of the landmark events you found most life changing and enjoyable
Regards
Rod

    Hello Rod
I think this is a good subject to reflect on sometimes so here are just a few of mine

Lived in a culturally diverse country
    Sailed the oceans
Walked in deserts and tropical forests
Experienced illness and had a wake up call
Own a house that dreams are made of
    Marriage
    Giving birth

I had a little look at your content and think that at some time in the past I must have dated the Coxeman, although in those days he was called Bedroom Eyes Bob. I also note that you are gay and that is just as well because after reading the bit about sizing, I would very much like to take you shopping. I never get it right you know and as an expert on this sort of thing you might be the answer. Shall we start at Rigby & Peller? Best to get the foundations in place first dont you think. I have told my husband and he says its fine with him.

thanks for the comment, much appreciated and welcome to the site.
Sounds like a great list and very far from ‘average’

I understand The Coxeman is ‘once met never forgotten’ - the nom de guerre you mention was probably a covert name for one of his undercover operations :)

I also note that you are gay
If I don’t find a wife by the weekend I may give it a go :)
    Cheers

    Rod,

Well it’s difficult to choose, there’s so many but in a nutshell the Witches have exceeded all expectations in just about every department from school years up. Now that in itself is an achievement and one we remind ourselves about when the dark clouds gather. On the arty side of life we once stood outside one of our favourite buildings in Barcelona and touched the ceramic bricks, what a thrill… then moments later we had to get on board our own personal transportation for home. Naturally we’ve done a lot of the big stuff which gave us the character to experience more of the small stuff.

I’m pleased the choice is difficult - that in itself could be the “Best Thing” !
    Long may it continue

    Dear Shy,

You sound like the sort of mortal woman who has seen a thing or two… have you tried bungee jumping? We did once, trouble was we still had hold of our broomstick which impaled itself in the river bed leaving us suspended in mid air under great tension. Three weeks later we told ourselves this is never going to work so we let go and became the first witches in unexpected orbit :)

At closer inspection it looks like Rod is more Hugh Hefner than Danny La Rue. I am buttoning up my cardigan as we speak!

    Shy,

You have arrived at a time when our dear host is in search of a wife (although now we’re all confused and intend to keep a firm grip on Colin). Perhaps you’d be kind enough to give us your first impressions of the man himself so that we have a clearer idea of how to market him.

p.s. no need to worry about buttoning things up… we keep him in a corral otherwise known as Grimsby and he is unlikely to wander far beyond :)

In answer to your question, like some estate agents might say viewing essential because he is obviously the girlie calendar kind and possibly a ruthless business man - i have had a look at some of his sites and he must be rolling in it!

    Who is Colin?
    Shy
ps are you quite sure he isnt gay - it could go either way looking at the photos!

    Evenin’ Shy,

It is as we feared… he’s appealing to the wrong crowd. The girls out there would never know it but he is a man of many parts and some of them you could introduce to your Mother! He’s cynical yes but no more cynical than the Witches (not as clever though) and he has excellent manners and a good wit… as to ‘rolling in it’, that we doubt but he wears very classy shoes.

What do you mean, who is Colin… dear Colin Firth of course, the great love of our potion making lives, what a splendid example of British manliness.

The gay issue is unresolved … the right rocker with shiny shoes and a liking for literature and gougere could be in with a real chance :)
