Visit Cleethorpes the Ninth Best Place in the UK

Regular viewers will be well aware that I am a frequent visitor to the Costa Del Cleethorpes and those who regularly comment have sometimes been derisive and facetious.
Well laugh no more, there are only 8 places in the whole of the United Kingdom that are happier !

Believe it or not an extensive countrywide survey has found out that Meggies is the ninth best place to live !
If feel particularly well placed to comment on this - why you might ask ?
Good point as I am usually arrogant enough to blog my comments and opinions in the misguided belief I am well placed to do so on all subjects :)
I believe I actually took part in the survey that played a part in this revelation (don’t blame me for the results) and secondly I am at this very moment sat on a bench in Cleethorpes and blogging live via mobile internet.

Yes folks, once again Tintin Ace Reporter is on the spot
“What news then ?” chime a disaffected chorus of readers.
Well thus far none, well I’ve had a picnic whilst sat here but that hardly constitutes a call to Reuters !
The new-fangled portable interweb thing is certainly showing promise - just think gentle reader how else would you have gotten to know that I’ve eaten a scotch egg, a sausage roll and a packet of crisps only moments after they start to clog my arteries !

The weather is absolutely glorious and I’ve walked several miles already with the original Henri Lloyd Transglobes still providing sterling service. Bathing beauties appear thin on the ground - in fact that’s about all that appears thin around here - except your svelte host of course

Waterfall

The Waterfall

I shall be expanding on this later (Cleethorpes that is - not second rate picnics)

I’m Back !

Steam Train Light Railway

Steam Train - Light Railway

The light railway is good - I was impressed = proper steam engine as well !

The Princess Diana Memorial - I’ve Got a Problem - Well two Actually !

Princess Diana Memorial Gardens

Princess Diana Memorial Garden

I’ve never been keen on the hype surrounding Diana nor the ridiculous outpouring of grief and subsequent divine status bestowed up on her. Do we need memorials or, Mithras forbid, concerts

Here’s a proper and worthwhile memorial:

RAF Airmen

Memorial to the Men & Women of
North Coates Strike Wing
Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice in World War II

Now back to that fatuous bint and something even worse - the bloody council !
I have no problem with the garden - looks nice - credit to the town - well played.
Why did the already hard-pressed council tax payers need the extra expense of the pointless stone though ?
Take a look at it and let me know if you feel the same as I did when I saw it.

Princess Diana Memorial Stone

Where’s the Apostrophe ?

Surely there should be an apostrophe in People’s - it’s possessive !

What’s the Goldeneye Verdict then …
Well , I had a lovely day there, lots of people about all seemingly enjoying themselves.
That said, my main activity was walking but there seemed to be enough to do for families or people less keen on moving about (quite a few of those by the look of it)

I don’t know whether it’s the ninth best place to live but I’ve been to an awful lot of worse places.
The only thing I would say is; quite a bit needs updating and tidying up. A great deal has been done but it’s segregated, disjointed - bits done here and there with no apparent ‘grand scheme’ or overall vision for a modern seaside resort or tourist destination !

You could do a lot worse - like #10 on the list for example :)

    Rod,

We only ask this because millions of readers will be pondering the same point….. why is it you like to walk in this area and not say, a favourite woodland? There must be something that draws you to this particular stretch of coast and it’s certainly not the Olympic ladies volleyball team :)

Perhaps we should add that your ‘on the spot’ reporting is commendable and we look forward with great anticipation to the next one…. anything quite frankly apart from Pit girls is a welcome relief :) It’s pointless sending you out of the county presumably otherwise we could suggest other coastal towns to visit …. beaches full of pit girls and ground breaking news stories, or possibly pit stories and ground breaking girls :)

p.s. Lincoln was no place for the Transglobal trotters today, far too steamy!

Personally I prefer Woodland and nature parks etc.
I walk every day of the week so it’s not as though I look on it as most would, a trip or half day out or whatever.

I go to Cleethorpes simply because it’s only a short drive, convenience !

Having lived permanently in Lincolnshire for over 20 years I decided to take my wife on our first trip to Cleethorpes to celebratge her birthday today, 21 July 2010.

The weather was fabulous and It is obvious that there has been considerable investment in Cleethorpes. Kingsway and Kings Road looked wonderful with the floral displays in the centre of the road and the gardens surrounding the boating lake are well tended. Even though the beach virutally empty, it was spotless and had the appearance of being very well groomed. There was a tractor and, I think, some foot patrols ensuring it stayed that way.

Apart from being uncharted terrority, I was first attracted to Cleethorpes because of my wife’s love of zoos and I discovered Cleethorpe had its own. Naturally, I thought, there would be an information office and plenty of other things to do an see. What a mistake ….

We made a bee-line for the Jungle Zoo and were delighted that parking was easy, with yards of the entrance. The Zoo ebtrance fee was nearly £5 each but without knowing what to expect we continued on. The “zoo” was very clean, the animals were well tended and fed, there were plenty of staff scurrying around doint their chores but not many visitors and to be frank not much to visit. As it was so quiet, we really took our time and even after visiting some exhibits twice we were back at the car within an hour. The zoo was in nothing more than menagerie and we felt somewhat cheated considering both the entrance fee and the hefty parking fee.

Hey, ho, there was a chicken & burger van in sight so a bit of lunch and a cold drink would prepar us for our expedition around Cleethorpes. How wrong can you be…. Another £7 for two of the worst burgers in the land and two luke warm drinks - we were not doing very well.

A pleasant walk around the boating lake passed the Discovery Centre and took us to the beach where a major operation was performed on my wallet for 2 ice creams. Our expensive treats were very nice and the weather was fabulous but we had been looking out for information about the town and other attractions. Alas nothing was available…

We drove up towards the pier looking for the town centre and managed to park for free for a whole hour - boy where we surprised. What we thought was the town centre (no maps or info) turned out to be a few banks and shops. We walked around a for about 20 minutes popped into a few shops then walked back to the main road looked up and down to see if there was anything else of interest, then at each other. It was unanimous, time for home!

It was obvious that Cleethorpes is trying to attract visitors - unfortunately there is still a long way to go.
We felt cheated and ripped off with the extortionate prices and inaccurate advertising and rather annoyed that there was very little infomation available.

Would we recommend or return to Cleethorpes? No
What could we say about Cleethorpes that was nice? The weather was fabulous.

We were not surprised that the place was empty and Cleethorpes does little to alter the battered image of the British seaside resort.

    What a shame…………

    Jim,
thanks for the comment and welcome to the site.
I’m sorry to have to say I agree with you . . . I fully understand the disappointment.

I cannot understand why they don’t do more with the area and in some cases do less.
Why claim to have a ‘zoo’ when most people’s connotation of a zoo is elephants and tigers etc

You get the feeling some councillors sat down and came up with a list of things they felt a holiday destination should have then set about trying to ‘do the list’ as cheaply and as half-heartedly as possible.

The place does have real potential it’s just some of it is run down and the ‘newer’ stuff is disappointing - it’s a real shame and coincidentally I was there myself today

    All the best
    Rod
