The Historian By Elizabeth Kostova ~ Book Review
In an attempt to bring a little culture to the site, for culture: read posts that few people are interested in, we are mentioning a couple of books we’ve just read and can recommend.
It is also World Book Day today !
If you’ve any recommended reading let us know
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is a tale that stretches across Europe and the centuries. Initially started by the arrival of an antiquarian book. It leads to a story that spans several lifetimes of integrated characters and Dracula !
Don’t abandon the idea there, it’s not a silly horror story but a tale of historical research with many true references to historical documents.
The detail and character depth is great throughout though the author never loses sight of the needs of the modern reading generation and keeps the story moving a a pace worthy of any thriller.
Goldeneye Verdict
Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks Review
Last week saw me read this book again. It must be some 5 years since I last read the book and it’s lost nothing second time around - this is truly a modern classic.
If you haven’t read this book then really you should !
It is based primarily in France and the main character is Stephen Wraysford whose life we follow through World War I onward. It’s a tale of horrific wartime life in the trenches, deep passionate love and normal people in extraordinary situations.
Whilst I have always been ‘aware’ of the horrors of The Somme and Flanders et althis book really brought home the unimaginable horror and futile waste of it all.
For this reason alone the book is worth everyone’s time !
I cannot imagine anybody who does not appreciate quality literature not being bowled over by this book
Goldeneye Rating
If post such as these are of interest I may do more - I read 1-3 books a week usually so no shortage of material.
