Tetney Lock ~ Visitors Guide ~ Fishing Birdwatching & Walking

Yesterday saw me on a little round trip just taking in the air, getting some exercise and enjoying the Lincolnshire Wolds in the sunshine - whilst it lasts.
Included in my itinerary was Tetney Lock; the idea being a lovely spot for a nice walk and perhaps a chance to get a few snaps

The photography bug has not only bitten but bitten deep dear reader - I actually now feel something’s not quite right if I go out without the trusty Motorhead bag full of my camera and day out essentials. Normally, I never go anywhere without my wallet, a cell phone and house keys; when anyone of those are missing I can somehow sense it and I feel as though something is not right - the camera equipment is now heading that way !

Anyhoo, it was a glorious day and a fantastic spot, we went there before, remember
I had hoped to see a bird of prey but it wasn’t to be - well perhaps in a way - I got a bird flying high overhead that preys of fish

A Cormorant in Flight

A Cormorant in Flight - I Think ?

You can walk all along the canal and lock right out to the estuary outfall - there were people angling, I myself have fished there for pike. After a short while you come to the to a wartime defence bunker which is part of a few other wartime defence installations in the area - including a sea fort just on the coast and clearly visible with the naked eye.
The first one is a pill box with narrow horizontal machine gun slots which is accessed by a short underground tunnel on the other side of the pathway.
On the other side of the river is this one, slightly different in design, which sits nicely in its surroundings and I thought the picture may give you a flavour of the place.

There were Swallows flying at incredible speeds along the river perhaps an inch or so above the water, sometimes just kissing it as they take an insect just hatching out - I thought I’d have a go at catching one on film.
Again, you’ll get the idea from the picture - little more. The fact that they are moving so fast and I was moving the camera as well trying to track them means clarity suffers but it’s incredible to watch them follow the river then swoop around the arches of the lock bridge - almost like something out of the Dambusters (who’s whistling that tune)

It’s a great place to walk and I not only enjoyed it but thoroughly recommend it to others.
My day trip was finished off with a brief stop at the hamlet of Waithe to record the church and then onto Louth once again were I sat beside the church, on a bench, in the sun, having a picnic and reading a book on church architecture - could it be any better ?
Well yes, it could, I could have been on a hot date with Abbey Clancy but in the absence of willing wags it’s the next best thing :)

    Chris,
you should know me by now - of course I’ve been to Donna Nook and of course it was when the seals weren’t there - I looked for them but was a quarter of a year too early :(
A motorbike is the mode of transport as that road must be a nightmare with traffic both ways !
Best of luck with the walk
    All the best

    Rod,

I had a walk from the old Chapel down to the sluice the other day. I took my wife since it was warm and pleasant.

I must say however, that the walk was marred by the tremendous amount of dog s*** all the way. It not only spoilt our walk but made me mad to think how much that dog owners contribute to the disgusting state of the planet. Here,s everyone shouting about carbon footprints and dog owners don’t realise that each dog contributes exactly the same amount od carbon footprint as a 4 x 4. What a filthy place Tetney Lock is, sorry.

    Hi Dave,
thanks for the comment and welcome to the site.
I’m sorry to hear that though from personal experience I’ve not found such a problem - that said I walk along the riverside.

I do agree with you about many dog owners though !
    All the best
