Swine Flu in Grimsby ~ Wybers Wood Plague !

One of my well-placed spies has just informed me that the dreaded Swine Flu is now abroad on Le Spa de Wybers
There have, I’m told, been two confirmed cases at Wybers-Wood Primary School in Grimsby

It was clear 3 months ago when I blogged about Swine Flu in Lincolnshire that this viral plague was encroaching on the Golden County of Lincs from other less sanitary counties and now it is actually within breathing distance of your hosts castle !
Time to Pull Up the Drawbridge Methinks

The school concerned informed parents that if they were concerned that they need not send their child to school - I’m not aware of exactly how many children stayed away but off-the-cuff anecdotal comments suggest ‘half didn’t turn up’

Quite where this leaves your host I’m not too sure. I’ll be avoiding children of course but then I tend to do that anyway as they are notorious carriers of disease and unpleasant maladies at the best of times - should I be inoculated ?

More to the point, can I get a jab to make me immune to swine flu ?
If so where do I go - my doctor may be dead for all I know - just a minute, just an minute . . . what about The Best Doctor in Grimsby Doctor Rod ?

I freely admit I know little about this as currently I’m not overly interested in anything after the Medieval Period - I am aware, however, that healthy people are now actually dying of this so . . .

How Do I Avoid Swine Flu
If you don’t want to catch it I recommend you spend all your spare money on rare books.
If you can’t read then just send me the cash and I’ll pray to Mithras for you.
Alternatively, turn your house into a bunker and lay low !

If You’re Female and Hot
If your a hot chick then I recommend throwing yourself at me - what have you got to lose - we may not have much longer.
If you’re sneezing or have a sore throat then throw yourself at somebody else - unless you’re Gemma Merna and have returned to Cleethorpes of course then I’ll make an exception and sacrifice myself.

On a more serious note
If you have any information, or opinions, about outbreaks in and around Grimsby feel free to leave a comment and share the information.

Healthily Yours
Rod

    Hi,
At present I do not think there is a vaccine, but there are anti-viral that can assist if you are diagnosed. I find that the grocery store in the place where one is most likely to contact any “bug” that is making the rounds. The best thing you can do is to frequently wash your hands, or use some of the commercial brands of hand sanitizers when you are out and about in confined places, such as stores.

Our Center for Disease Control has already issued a warning to all medical facilities that this winter’s flu season will be a pip. If I were you, I would make sure to get the annual flu jab from your quack.

Sorry I don’t have any infoa on the Grimsby outbreak, but will do research and will conveey anything I learn.

    Cordially yours,

    Rod,
My friend has it and is very poorly, she has been given no help or advice from her GP and has had to rely on a friend of hers in the States who is in the police force and has attended seminars on the subject for help and information.
All that said there is too much scaremongering going on, the fact is at least 5,000 people die of flu in the UK every year.

    LB,
sorry to hear about your friend - I suspect we’ll all have a similar story before too long.
Strange how a news story is just that - a story - until it actually comes home !

Good point about the scaremongering !
    Cheers

All I can say is one of our patiients called the swine flu helpline and all they got was a load of crackling….

    Sorry, bad joke!

Seriously though, this is really becoming a problem for GP surgeries. As we are telling people not to come to practice, we are restricted to diagnosing over the phone and then issuing a script for anti virals. In some cases this is a waste of money for the cash strapped NHS as a large number of the people probably don’t have anything more than a cold and most of the anti virals end up wasted because they make them feel worse than the ‘bug’ itself!

The other crazy thing is that most of the people with a genuine positive diagnosis are school age but are they in the target groups for the first batch of the new vaccine? No!

I think the world has gone slightly mad…. :- )

P.S I hope our good host is taking the wise precaution of staying away from his teenage fan club and remaining cooped up in the safety of his own home x

    Hi PM
thanks for inside story, very much appreciated.
The medical services, at all levels, are surely in for a nightmare. I watched Question Time last night and they were grilling a Minister as to whether the Health Service could cope.
Everybody was full of PC garbage and said they could . . .
But, the Health Service will never cope if predictions for spread are correct.

This is no reflection on the system or those that work in it - in fact if they could cope that would be a disgrace as it would mean they’d spent unimaginable sums of money building huge spare capacity into the system.
If it does get bad I hope people just get on with it instead of looking to blame everybody and calling for yet another pointless public enquiry.

We all need to be realistic and accept that these things happen and have realistic and logical expectations of the health system - I mean it’s easy to say give everybody a jab now - but how the hell do you actually do that ?
    It’s logistically impossible

Must dash as I’m busy sealing the windows up :)
    Best
    Rod
