Stapleford Church ~ All Saints in Lincs ~ A Historical Guide

All Saints church in Stapleford is located in a picturesque spot close to the river Witham in Lincolnshire
It’s very much a church of two halves

Quite literally in fact with a rebuild in red brick it looks quite unusual. Whilst it may look a little modern in red brick, and indeed could be referred to as a modern rebuild, it was in fact done some time ago, 1770 in fact !
The tower however is circa 13th century in origin - particularly the tower arch. The tower appears to have been rebuilt or heavily renovated but it’s been done using the original masonry.

You may note the four grey ovals on the wall , two either side of a window, these struck me as a little unusual as they are memorial plaques - not something I recall coming across before precisely in this style and location on the outside of a church wall.

Parish registers can be dated back to 1695 and a Bishop’s transcript older still at 1562.

I was unable to go inside which is a shame as Pevsner says there is a ‘Lobster Pot’ English civil war helmet in the chancel, something I’ll rectify if at all possible on a later date.
If you know of anything related to this church then please do leave a comment we should really like to hear anything at all you know.

It’s a lovely place in a delightful spot and I can do no better than leave you with Arthur Mee’s summary, a little flowery perhaps but of its time and still very apt

The church looks out on a pleasant prospect of green meadows and golden haystacks - the kind of English Pastoral that is enshrined in the heart of many an Englishman in exile far away

    Rod,
The date of the rebuild is very suprising, you have caught the feel of the place wonderfully well with your photograph, it’s certainly a nice detour.

    Rod,

I’m not surprised it is locked if the helmet is there. There used to be helmet in Stallingborough church and guess what…..

I went there one day and there were two guys with a landrover and a set of oxy-acetylene cutting gear cutting the old bracket oil lamp off the corner of the porch :( When I queried what they were up to they claimed to have permission to remove it. Some people have no respect.

    Regards,

    Neville,
that’s the thing - it’s a real shame and a sad fact of life.
What does surprise me is that there are still quite a few that are open when one would expect them all to be shut.
    Best
