Jason

The Pastscape website lists the other batteries defending Scunthorpe, with grid references. Search 'North Lincolnshire' county, 'anti aircraft battery' as specific monument type. Most of them had been dismantled by 1942, as the expected heavy attacks never came... why was this ?

H1 Burton upon Stather H2 Roxby H3 Appleby H4 Holme H5 Bottesford H6 Flixborough H7 Alkborough H8 Winteringham H9 ?? H10 Broughton H11 Burringham H12 Luddington

Jason,
they're all over the place so I imagine there would be the ones you suggest.
It's sometimes difficult to know which ar which, the Stallingborough Artillery Post often referred to in books and on maps etc is in fact not this one, the site is now under a chemical factory.

Only the MOD know all and they'r enot telling :)
Best

hi,i have been to explore several of the local structures, including keelby, goxhill, wintringham and h2 near scunthorpe.just a quick question? wintringham was h8,sawcliffe was h2,is there other sites presumably h1,h3,h4,h5 etc around scunthorpe.seems strange that the only scunthorpe site is considerably north of town.help and advice would be great.

Phil,
thanks for the comment and welcome to the site. It's a wonderful contribution to all the comments already here - first-hand information that is now properly recorded and we've nailed a myth about the MOD planting trees - how do we know they didn't . . . because you did - fantastic Phil
Thanks again

just a few bits of info i know about the battery at little london i used to work for the farmer who owned the site it was m f strawson at aylesby but he sold it to its current owner somerscales at keelby the trees were not planted by the mod but by myself and other employees and i remember strimming around them when they were young i also used to live in one of the cottages opposite the pub and spent many hours around the site with my dog mainly trying to find the entrance to the tunnel system which was supposed to be under the field which i was informed about by one of the old farmhands who had lived and worked around there all his life. I also remember when working the field there was huge lumps of concrete scattered all over the field which we had to remove often they were so large you would have to remove them with a forklift and some where near the buildings on keelby road when part of the site was demolished some of the gun mounts couldnt be broken up so a very large hole was dug and the mounts pushed in and buried the same man who told me this had also been inside the nuclear bunker when the mod used to come every few months to swap the supplies and i remember seeing the mod turn up some time in the late 90s. during the many hours searching the site i never really found any thing apart from a rusty sand ladder which i placed inside what looked like a brick store attached to the side of one of the emplacements this is a fabulous article and has got me wanting to go back and have a look round again

Ros,
not sure about that, the way forward is to identify the flight. Find out the date or the crash site or indeed the name of anybody on board - anything that pinpoints the plane or crash site or date
Cheers

Hi Rod
Thanks for your reply. Is there a list of Argentinian crew lost on Lancasters on any site? I have been unable to find one. That was my idea for taking this forward.

Ros,
thanks for the fascinating comment and welcome to the site.
I've done a list of the Lancasters that came down in Lincolnshire - it could well be on there.
It would be very interetsing to find out more about this incident

My late mother was an artillary leutenant stationed at Stallingborough in 1944-45. After she died her sister told me that she had been engaged to an Argentinian crewman of a returning Lancaster which her battery at Stallingborough had opened fire on by accident and shot down. All crew lost. She never told anyone else while she was alive because of the official secrets act. I would love to know more. Does anyone have any info?
