Spittal Hill ~ History & Research on One of Nuns’ Hills in Grimsby
Spittal Hill is but one of a number of ancient hills in Grimsby Lincolnshire.
This page will attempt to collate as much information about this particular one as possible
Three hills made up Nuns’ Hills as can be seen from the map, they were Spittal Hill, Mill Hill and Chapel Hill
Information on the other hills can be seen via the links above but for clarity we’ll only discuss Spittal Hill here.
There seems to be some ambiguity as to the exact location, one source suggests it is Hill B (see map) but let’s try and look at every theory possible before settling on one position.
It is believed that it was once the site of a Knights Hospitaller establishment, several sources allude to this.
George Shaw states that the building was built so wanderers and pilgrims were entertained and relieved.
Interestingly he also claims a portion of it to be still standing !
Quite what his date reference or range is on that statement I can only guess, the book was published in 1897 for what that’s worth.
The site is of even greater potential interest as there is a possible Knights Templar connection to it.
On a thread started by the research conducted by Neville Sisson the possibility of a Knights Templar Preceptory in Grimsby has arisen.
Further discussion and information about that can be found via that link.
It’s worth pointing out that most of the extensive land and property once owned by the Templars ended up in the hands of the Knights Hospitallers so the connection is a very solid one.
If you know of anything at all remotely connected to Spittal Hill then please do drop a comment in - we’re very keen to collate as much information as possible on this.
Should you prefer you can always email me - either way if you know anything or have any ideas or theories please do share them because as can be seen - information is thin on the ground
[caveat] There is now a suggestion that this hill does not make up part of the three shown on the map !?!
All the best
