Sixhills Church ~ a Complete Guide
All Saints Church Sixhills in Lincolnshire
The result of day trip to Sixhills and subsequent research into its history
The tiny village of Sixhills is located a few miles south of Market Rasen just off a Roman road.
It’s a beautiful spot with spectacular views looking out onto the Wolds. Doing justice to its surroundings is the beautiful church - small but perfectly formed as they say.
It’s not as old as one might first think as the original church was pulled down and this one built in the Early English style in 1869 by James Fowler.
The tower has the original masonry but has also been rebuilt after collapsing during the rebuilding period.
Few period features remain intact though there is some of the original 13th arcade in in the north wall of the nave.
The available parish register dates as far back as 1672 but of particular interest to us is a connection that dates back to the reign of King Stephen !
The church is connected to a Gilbertine Priory which once stood nearby.
This will be the subject of a separate post so more to come on that one later.
This is the point where we appeal for more information about the church or anything connected with it. We should like to find out and preserve as much information as possible so if you do know anything at all or have any opinions or stories on this church or its history then please do leave a comment - anything at all - many thanks in advance

Just to keep the thread rolling.
‘Sixil V[icarage]. Roberet of Rasen, ch[aplain], p[resented] by the P[rior] and C[onvent] of Sixhills to the vicarage of Sixhills vacant by the death of Richard. Inst[ituted] Horncastle, July 18, 1292.’
Rolls & Register of Bishop Sutton 1280-1299
There are several entries relating to Sixhills Priory but I will save those for when Rod does his post on the priory.

Sorry to hear about the wall Rod.
You know I’ll help if I can. just e-mail the problem if you think I might be able to resolve anything. I must get on with a database of my Lincs. library and let you have a copy, then you will know if there is anything that might hold keys. It will take a while though to do it properly.
