Actually looking at the map where the "bishops palace" "is" and it looks for all the world a roman site, size, scale etc. Taking my penny off the table now though cester, caster etc are saxon names for roman places? Addictive this place!

I'm convinced that it's at Sturton by Stow. I've metal detected round there too including the field where the farmer says "that's where the bishops palace was" I think it was first thought to be a villa. Lots of stone (not just the natural limestone from the ridge) and RB - medieval pottery, metal finds have been Roman (road to Littleborough is roman) through to late medieval and more "old" lead then I've had from any other area, the lead needs to come off before other stuff comes. Stow park and the fields around Stow cover a huge area even for the rallies on Bradshaws (?) land, and absence of evidence is not evidence of absence! Penny on the table says it's stow at the jnc of the roman canal and road.

Hi, I'm reading John Nichols History of the Antiquities of Leicestershire and the appendix in Book 1, vol 1 has a discussion (from the late 1700's) regarding the various possible locations for Sidnacester. This book (4 books, 8 vols) is available online from the University of Leicester. Being interested I googled and came here, only to find the mystery still unsolved. Hope this may help you, Bryn.
