Should I Buy Another Guitar
I’ve been thinking of buying a new guitar, or more precisely a Paul Gilbert PGM Ibanez
I suppose I don’t need one but … well you know !
I am pausing for thought though after reading this harrowing story in the Grimbarian Gazette

Famous Local Blogger Crushed in Guitar Avalanche
Rod Collins, ageing guitar hero and Freeman of the Borough, was found by Police today crushed by guitars.
Neighbours called the rozzers after the smell emanating from his house became unbearable, even by normal standards. The Lincolnshire Police affected an entry after promptly responding to the call only 2 weeks after it was made. The sight that met them brought tears to the eyes of even the most hardened Peeler.
A fine figure of a man cut down in his prime and whose absence went unnoticed for over a week.
Inspector Knacker said: It’s a sad fact of modern life that even someone so famous he gets recognized in the street can meet with such a tragedy and ultimately lay in his own house for over a week without anybody knowing or caring.
I would also like to take this opportunity to warn others of the dangers of excessive guitar ownership and over-indulgence.
Being a well-known bachelor Mr Collins leaves no wife or descendents but it is understood that his brother ordered a new 7 Series BMW on hearing the tragic news.
A senior local council member expressed regret at the news:
It’s a great loss
He was only 3 days away from paying a years Council Tax in advance

And i thought you had finally made it big in Grimsby.
This was one of the headlines from the Grimsby Telegraph online today
“Musical maestro Roderick delivers”
………..but alas unless you have a pseudonym you have failed your potential audience of millions!

HH,
I’m unlikely to ‘deliver’ I’m afraid - more likely . . . return unopened to sender

Greetings Rod,.Nice” harem” So many Les Pauls in this world -not sure how i fancy them played.Hmmmn Jeff Beck’s Blow by Blow period Frippertronics,?Perhaps early Clapton -fresh raw & stunning @Klook’s Kleek,.the always right Martin Barre the searing summer day of Peter Green or roughed up by Gary Moore. But for some reason a comely lass(hot tramp) by the name of Firebird is all I want to listen to lately -have you met?
Rod said,

TJ
never really been a huge fan of Les Pauls though I like them in the hands of Gary Moore
I try to avoid Hot Tamps TK - they’re nothing but trouble I find.
There’s a time in life when they’re worth the trouble they bring and a time when they’re not
Cheers

This is hilarious and OH dear, also likely to happen to Mr Kate or possibly even me
The blinking things are everywhere in the house and I trip over them on an hourly basis as well as the amps and the stands and the leads - and I find plecs in the most unusual places : roll :
I refuse to dust them.
I know more than I ever wished to know about them.
I did carve a 2/3 size strat once in portland stone and welsh black slate as part of a lettercutting project when I was at college, but that’s another story (it bears part of the legend “shut up and play your guitar” - thanks to Mr Zappa for the inspiration!). It now resides in the garden.
Don’t even get me started on Gary blinking Moore who is a deity to my OH (he has seen him umpteen times since his early days as he is also a raving Thin Lizzy fan: once was enough for me, ta): as far has I’m concerned most of his stuff is a reworking of Parisian walkways and whingy bloke stuff (he should stick to the blues) and he can’t sing either (OK, he can sing better than me, but nevertheless…) : twisted : and I don’t care if I get hate mail for saying that! - Now, Jeff Beck is a deity IMHO, except his latest album which is -insert rude word here; unfortunately Stevie Ray Vaughan is no longer here to share his godness with us, but is remembered fondly.
Yes he has a Gary Moore Les Paul; the latest toy is a Fender classical guitar.
I do not talk about history/archaeology/artefacts anywhere near as much as he talks about guitars.
I think he needs treatment for it as it is out of hand years ago and he cannot stop buying and talking about the darn things, sigh… He only actually plays them about once a month, just looks at them and strokes them and and adds new pickups and pots and machine heads and other fripperies and then loves them and strokes them and loves them some more - it would be a bit creepy really if I didn’t know him…
The worst of it is that his little brother and the nephew are as bad as he is. Possibly worse as his LB gigs several times a week. It becomes combatative guitar playing hell here when they visit.
Take solace in the fact that you are not alone, Rod.

Kate,
it’s addictive and I don’t really know why. You want new guitars all the time yet you know you have a favourite, or ‘best one’ and that’s the one you’ll always use anyway !
I like Gary Moore but ultimately he’s a pastiche really but a joy to listen to, Jeff Beck on the other hand . . . he’s the real deal.
For me to top men in the order they came are: Jimi Hendrix - Eddie Van Halen - Steve Vai
Best

Have had fun browsing through the various threads of your blog today, Rod.
Great picture. I, too, am guitar addicted, although more to listening than owning and playing, these days. Jimi has always been my hero, but it would be hard for me to get close to a top ten favourite guitarists. I was though, concerned that the greats were dying out and there were no youngsters coming up, until I heard Joe Bonnamassa and subsequently had the privilege of seeing him on two consecutive days at the Byron Bay Blues Festival. If you don’t know him, check him out; a joy to behold… in my view, as good as anyone I have ever heard!

Gloria,
pleased you’re enjoying your time hear and the feedback is really appreciated.
Jimi is the man of that there’s no doubt.
My brother put me onto Joe Bonnamassa he’s certainly outstanding in his field.
I’m the same when it comes to listening more than playing now I’m afraid
Regards
Rod

Rod How about telling us exactly what Guitars you have and what you play ie. Blues,Old style Rock,Modern Rock,Heavy metal,Country,What is your favourite manufacturer? Do you think the Gibson is the Rolls Royce of guitars. How do you rate Fender Stratocaster copies or do you think that only the real thing is good enough..How do you generally feel about copies? Do you use music or tab? It is amazing how much pleasure you can get from guitar playing. No other instrument has as many different ways of playing. There are more books written about guitar playing than any other instrument.

Paul,
I picked a guitar up last week for the first time in an age, I got it on me to learn Panzer Battalion by Sabaton for some strange reason . . .
Heavy rock for me primarily Paul though I used to play many different styles.
Never really been into Gibsons, many years ago I had a custom Charvel / Jackson from America and it wiped the floor with every Les Paul I ever touched.
I’ve an affinity with Strats Paul, the first ‘quality’ guitar I bought was a Strat but they also sound a bit thin compared to the Jackson with active humbuckers or now the Steve Vai Ibanez.
It’s tab not music for me Paul as the stuff I used to learn was never written down in music form, different now of course but back then . . .
Cheers

Rod,
on a lighter note what you need is “sustaine” dont ask me how i know!
1…..1967 ish Gretsch Nashville 6120 but in burnt orange.
2……or a 1964 Tennessean.
3……better a pea green 1960 ish Gretsch double anniversary with bigsby.
And 4….. to blow the house a Gibson Firebird non reverse with 3 mini humbuckers and bigsby BUT must be in Fiesta Red.(as per Crysler Du-Pont PAINT.
Finally at the end of times imagine what pleasure a true instrament of pedigree has given all and what a inheritance for others. Forget Ferrari think of Les Paul or Jeff Beck or Wes Montgomery or George Benson,

Saxman,
that’s an expensive shopping list you’ve put together there
you mention Jeff Beck, I never know why so many people talk of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton when JB can play better than the two of them put together.
Best,
