Roadworks on the M1 and Other Miseries

It’s well known that travel narrows the mind and is generally best avoided.
I say this having done a great deal of it in the past and gained little or nothing from it.
Of course living in Lincolnshire means I am well served with a veritable cornucopia of delights but those who are less fortunate and live elsewhere probably have to travel - just like I did today

It’s not just me you know - our esteemed politicians also do not want people travel, unless those people are politicians and are travelling to holiday on a Russian billionaire’s yacht in Corfu of course !
Ever the rebel your host decided he had to take to the road so prepared for the arduous journey:

£65 ($130) of petrol (gas) in the car
    Wallet
    Bottle of water
    2 laptops
    Cellphone

And off we jolly well go.
Travelling through Britain means roadworks - it must be a good racket to be in - the work never seems to dry up.
Hitting the M1 it wasn’t long before I was warned to slow down to 50 mph because there “could be queues ahead”
Everybody slowed down and thereby created the queues - a self-fulfilling prophecy !

After half an hour of peddling at 50 we were all again released to do 70mpg again - there was no reason for any possible queue but I don’t suppose that’s relevant.
No sooner was the Goldeneye Chariot up to speed when it was reduced to travelling at 40mph and surrounded by speed cameras.
You often see signs when you’re in roadworks saying
Delays Possible Until … and a date
I did a double take when I saw the ones here
Delays Possible Until Autumn 2010

Am I right in thinking it’s now Autumn 2008 or have I lost a couple of years ?
How did they ever build the pyramids of a cathedral ?

The eagle-eyed amongst you will no doubt have spotted what I forgot to include in my list noted above.
Yes - my altimeter !
Being a coastal boy I am particularly sensitive to being too high above sea level ! I am ever cautious of the risk of nose bleeds, dizziness and nausea when finding oneself too high above sea level.
Not having my altimeter meant I was unawares and strangely symptom free so I must entertain the possibility it is all in the mind :)

5 hours of driving and 11 hours away from La Casa Goldeneye has been a trying day for one in his dotage.
I feel I can now recommend with renewed vigour, to those unfortunate enough to live outside this area, the idea of moving to Lincolnshire and foregoing the need to travel excessive distances.
Regards
Rod the Traveller

    Rod,

Sadly we have to agree…. the travelling part is a drag but the visiting other places part is generally a good idea once in a while.

Knowing your sense of direction we presume you took with you a map or a satnav, or perhaps is was a well trodden path familiar to you… either way you made it back, well done :)

I’d certainly be keen on travel if teleportation was available :)
    Satnav - what’s that ??
I had directions written on a piece of paper !
    Cheers

    Rod,
Try having my job :( Yesterday I spent half the afternoon driving through Cumbrian flood plains, I felt like James Bond in the Esprit Turbot- minus the looks, car and women.

    Rod,
Don’t blame you, nobody at college told me I would one day have to read architects drawings or worse show an architect my feeble attempt at one. There was really nothing wrong with mine other than a couple of minor details such as scale and allowing for door openings. Other than that I’ve found my calling-NOT!!

the job of making Britain great again has fallen to you.
I’ll stand and watch from a distance like the slacker I am :)
    Cheers
