Report Ghost Stories, Myths & Supernatural things in Lincolnshire
Ghosts - Myths - Legends - Supernatural - Just Plain Weird Occurrences in Lincolnshire
As I’m building a database of articles of all things mythical, ghostly and strange that have happened in Lincolnshire’s history I thought it would be a good idea to have one place to initially report or make suggestions
If you have any knowledge of myths, fables and all things occult in nature please do leave a comment. My idea will be to write up a separate article for each legend or suggestion - so just a brief one line description here left as a comment would be great.
I’ll then take it and run with it if possible - of course submissions are more than welcome if you have substantive information but please email that to me so we can keep relevant information in the right place - thank you
Any tips or information will, of course, be credited unless of course you wish to remain anonymous.
I hope you share my opinion that this central collecting point is a good idea - I wanted to avoid cross posting and confusion on other posts whilst of course appealing for any help and information that anybody out there has on myths and legends that are based in Lincolnshire.
They can be ancient or more modern
To give you an idea here’s a couple we’ve already had:
If you have any suggestions then please do leave a comment - all submissions are greatly appreciated and I hope over time that we can provide a real resource of these stories and legends from Lincs.
Spookily Yours
Rod

Hi Rod,
Interesting stuff! I wonder if any of your readers have heard of the Ghost that is believed to be of a young girl who is often spotted on or near the A180 in the vicinity of Little London crossing?
Regards
Dave

Where do i start?
Ill start at work.
In the last 7 years of working at HUY i have visibly seen one ghost and heard many others, and there are many more staff who have had, how shall we say, strange occurances.
My visible occurance was late one night in the main terminal. I was just doing my job when, and all i can describe it as was the age old addage of the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I looked up and saw a figure (which looked like a negative) dressed in full flying gear walk from where there is now a solid wall, cross the checking in floor, disappearing from my view as it ‘walked’ behind the pillars in the terminal, becoming visible again between the pillars and then finally disappeared from view about 15 seconds later when the angle of where i was stood took it behind the pillars and GONE’. At the time i just stood there, immediately trying to understand what i had just seen, and then i turned and walked into the ladies toilets where my colleagues were working. I was asked what was up and said i have just seen a figure walking across the terminal floor……….and the reply?
OOOOOOh…..youve seen one as well have you?
After coming to terms with it, and giving my head a few days to take it in, i spoke to the same workmate and she said that a few years previous, one of the Hygiene team had been cleaning in the restaurant and had turned round and seen the figure of a flyer stood next to a propeller, which had been recovered from one of the numerous crashes in the area during WW2.
When i returned to the spot i had seen Mr Flyer, i retraced where i had seen it walking, and it was aligned exactly with where the propeller had been situated.
Make of it what you will!
I have also heard, on numerous occasions, talking, singing and laughing (nothing clear enough to understand) in the arrivals hall. Always late at night when its quiet, it makes you think if those ‘noises’ also happen during the day, but because of the ambient noise they are unable to be heard.
Getting away from HUY and all the way upto Edinburgh, i have photographs of ’scratches’ i got from the MacKenzie poltergeist in Greyfriars Kirk (church) yard. There have been many many occurances of people being ‘attacked’.
The odd thing about my scratches was that the appeared on my neck and on my forearm, even though i had a long sleeved sweatshirt on. My wife nearly sh*t herself when she saw them! I wanted to go back there the following night….on my own!!! Needless to say….i didnt return for fear of having my testicular spheres being worn as earrings!
I know which side my balls are buttered!!!

great stuff - I was going to say it sounds like the place to be - but perhaps not
I makes me wonder sometimes why some places seem to have so many ‘incidents’ yet others none ?

I thought you all might like to hear of an event I’ve just come across in a pamphlet in a university library.
It is entitled “Strange and wonderful news from Linconshire” and is dated 1679. I must say that they seemed to have a ’strange and wonderful’ attitude to news in those days as it goes on to elaborate thus: “A dreadful account of a most inhumane and bloody murther committed upon the body of one Mr. Carter, by the contrivance of his elder brother….” it then describes how he was found out. Seemingly there appeared, “…….a most dreadful and terrible ghost, sent by Almighty Providence for the discovery, as also, the manner of its appearance in several shapes and forms, with fresh bleeding wounds, still pursuing the murtherer from place to place,” The guilty party made vain attempts to destroy the ghost by magic but to no avail as he made a full confession “….when apprehended, with many other remarkable circmstances; this was communicated in a letter to a gentleman of very good quality in London, the truth of which is attested under the hands of George Smith, James Simson and Gregory Wilson, men of good repute and fame, living near Stampford.”
I’ll keep my eyes open, (through gaps in my fingers!), for any more of such early reports on ghosts
Tremblingly yours,
le

Rod, when the Red Arrows were due to move back to Scampton in 2001, I was at the base with just a few men recovering a damaged aircraft. When all the men had finished the paperwork, I found myself alone with the Hangar to secure. An oversight as I should have nominated one of the guys. Unperterbed I walked around the building, checked all the offices and started to extinguish all the lights. I had just turned off the main lights in the Hangar and was going out of the centre door when the right hand side lights came on. I walked to the right hand corner of the hangar and turned them off, almost straight away the hangar lights on the left side came on. I shouted OK youve had you fun, now let me go home. I never told anyone, assuming it was just a coincidence until we hada few hours to kill one afternoon and everyone started to tell of strange voices. One Girl was locking up, she was about to enter an office when she noticed the lights on an could hear voices. She went and sat in the crew room a few yards from the office and waited for the meeting to finish. 15 minutes later she went to check when they were due to finish. The office was locked, lights out and no-one there.
One Sunday A guy took his friend and young Daughter to have a look around the Hangar, whilst there another Sqn member arrived, they had a chat and the guy departed. As he started to lock up, the girl asked if he was going to let out the other man that was stood with them earlier. He announced that he had gone home, Not that one replied the girl, the other man with the long grey coat who was stood behind you.
I can carry on as a least 5-6 other people came to see me to report strange happenings. I always advised them not to worry, in my eyes they were all RAF just trying to be friendly, they would cause us no harm and were probably lonely and lost souls.

A few years ago I was standing in the street outside my house having a talk with a neighbour when something caught our eye, just a couple of houses over, couldn’t have been more than 100 yards from us behind a car, it looked to be some plastic blowing in the wind, there was only a light breeze so it was confusing how what seemed to be this thick white plastic was whipping about like there was a strong wind, we just stared at it as it then moved from one side of the car to the other at a speed that just seemed to be faster than a person could manage as we thought maybe someone was playing a joke on us or something. There was no sound coming from it and it kept this pattern of billowing from one end of the car to flying to the other side and back, we started to move toward it when it seemed to take more of an intimidating shape as something I could only describe as a wraith, sort of like the grim reaper in White tattered cloth, it then flew off at a lightning fast pace I have never seen almost like it was then shapeless, just a wad of cloth streaming across the ground behind a bush across the road and against the direction of the breeze, at this point we both darted into our houses, I immediately ran to a window on the stairs for a good view and stared out for around 2 hours but it was already gone, to this day no one has been able to provide any explanation to what we both experienced and I just can’t shake it from my head,

I and my family have just moved to Lincoln, about mid may my partner and myself went out into the back garden for a smoke when suddenly we heard what sounded like an old ww2 plane ,i say ww2 because it was a loud deep droning sound,i honestly couldn’t tell you what kind of plane it was but it was loud and not like a commercial airline, anyway this went on for about a minute then stopped, we didn’t see anything and we both thought it a bit strange and bloody spooky to say the least.Has anyone else heard this? and do they fly old planes to diff airbases as i know Lincolnshire is famous for them. This happened at around 1.30am by the way, would love to hear from anyone else who has experienced this.

Lisa,
thanks for the comment and welcome to the site.
there are plenty of old planes about in Lincolnshire, though seldom at 1.30am I suspect.
Perhaps others may know more about this.
I do know somebody who has a ‘ghostly tale’ which involves heard but unseen WWII aircraft over Lincolnshire

Lisa, IF it was the engine of a WW2 plane I would have been sat there with the biggest smile on my face anyway as I love the sound of them, ghostly or not!
But to try and logically (if there is such a thing in this case) work out what it could be, you have to work out what it WASNT before you work out what it WAS.
As a believer myself, Im not trying to poo poo your idea, as it would be a marvellous thing if it was the ghostly sound of a Merlin engine or the like, but on this occasion i would hazard a guess that it was probably a big diesel engine being used as a generator at a local(ish), depending on the wind, factory or building complex.
We have one at work that kicks in every now and then, at all times of day and night, just to recharge its own batteries and after a minute or two it stops just as soon as it started. It is a big old thing, very loud and certainly has a droning tone to it when its running. On a breezy night it can be heard upto 4 miles away, as confirmed by one of my work colleagues who lives near to the Airport.
What part of Lincoln have you moved to? Have you looked into the history of the immediate area? The only recorded area in Lincoln, rather than the Military bases dotted outside, that had anything to do with aircraft was Bracebridge Heath, where there were manufacturing plants for Sopwith and Handley Page. They used to fly the planes from what was later known as ‘Handley Page Field’ for both testing and delivery.

Reading these posts with great interest whilst trying to keep myself fresh for a saturday night out! Anyway,Mcdonalds in GY town centre, again,is allegedly haunted.I’v been told it used to be an old theatre/cinema back in the day (30’s-70’s) and these have been known to be a hotbed of ’strange doings’ (as my gran used to say).
A couple of my friends used to work there in the early 90’s and used to speak of the usual assortment of phenomena.Lights turning on/off,things being moved around in the store room(s),shadows, noises etc.Im not too sure of the origins of the building,History Hunter et al would probably know more.Regards.

Sean,
it was indeed, still bears the name in stone high above the doorway - The Savoy Picture House.
I’ve not heard any tales of from there myself but would be keen to hear more if others have.
Best
