If you want my honest opinion of People's Park now, I'll give you it, I think it is an absolute disgrace that 'Money talks', the students worked so hard, the cactus area has gone, the almost Kew Gardens part is no more, the aviary part is no longer there, that was a decision made at council level to save a few bob and to be quite honest, I can see no rhyme or reason in such decisions, the people of Grimsby should have fought harder to stop the heart being ripped out of the park, I'll always enjoy walking through People's Park but I'll never understand why some bureaucrats felt the need to swing the axe on something so beautiful.

I took my little boy there for the first time the other day. He loved it so much that even though we had been there in the freezing cold for three hours (he's only one) he refused to leave! It's my favourite place in grimsby. Nice to find some interesting history in a place that reminds me of my home town newark on Trent which incidentally is also worth a visit not far from here. Great site also x

Julie,

As I have mentioned elsewhere on this site, I worked at People's Park in the sixties when the Superintendent was Cliff Vanson. As a keen amateur photographer I took quite a lot of pictures of interesting features of the site. Sadly, it was decided to demolish the fine Victorian Lodge in November 1967 so I took a couple of colour slides once I was aware of this. I have recently made a digital copy of one of the slides and shall e-mail a copy to Rod to post here if he would. Sorry that it isn't very clear but it has suffered from 50 years of storage and in the copying process.

<center><img src="http://www.rodcollins.com/images/peoples-park-lodge.jpg" alt="People's Park Lodge Grimsby"/></center>

I also have a newspaper cutting from the Grimsby Evening Telegraph dated 3 November 1967 recording the passing. It not only illustrates the before and after of the event but mentions your great grandfather!

Regards,
Neville

I'm the great granddaughter of the park keeper, Christopher King, from the 20's and 30's. No longer a grimsby resident but I have fond memories as a child of walking through the outer circle of trees in the autumn searching for conkers, the big rabbit hutch, the Hospital Carnival (of course) and knowing that my dads grandfather lived in that glorious old house at the park entrance on Welholme Road.

hi Rod ~ absolutely wonderful website! Do you happen to know if the iron column at the Bargate edge of P Pk is a stench pole or has it another use. I wondered if it could be a chimney to a long forgoteen hot house for example. Thanks B
