Motorhead Motorizer Review ~ New Album CD

Motörhead - Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee are back with a brand new 11 song CD entitled
Motorizer
An album review from a veteran fan of over 25 years standing !

Being The Lone Shredder and having friends in high low places we have been lucky enough to have been given a quick listen to a press promotional copy of the new CD Motoriser. The opinions expressed here are based on a one time listen and were written as I listened due to time constraints.

Motorhead Motorizer Album Cover Artwork

This review is based on a first listen, always a mistake really as you need a good few listens, especially with Motorhead. That said, for me the success of the album rests on the comparison to Inferno ! That was superb, one of their best records to date. The last album was, I’m sorry to say, a little disappointing.

A Review of the tracks in order

Runaround Man

A standard track not bad but not special

Teach You How To Sing The Blues

This has those trade mark Lemmy lyrics that appear almost to be spoken rather than falling into a true song format. This type of ‘feel’ always seems like a ‘that’ll do’ feel from Lemmy who can write some stunning songs when he can be bothered

When The Eagle Screams

This one is the best so far. A military theme to the lyrics means the band are always on solid ground thanks to Lemmy’s scholarly knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject matter.

Rock Out
OK, liking this one, got some drive to it. Even an Iron Fist like bass line

One Short Life

    Bit plodding if I’m honest

Buried Alive

A bit more lively than the last one, the lyrics allow the song to flow.
As with the others a lack of killer guitar riffs though.

English Rose

    Ummmm !

Back On The Chain

One of the better tracks but once again sounds a little same old same old.
Licks and chords sequences are a little generic for me

Heroes

Feels like a space filler I’m sorry to say

Time Is Right

When this started I almost though we could be Going to Brazil for a split second but no …

The Thousand Names Of God

A strong song to finish on and one that will grow when I can actually buy the album and give it several listens

Final Overview A Review of Motorizer by Motorhead
A band with this kind of heritage and back catalogue are always going to have a problem doing something new.
Do we want anything ‘new’ well no, for me just what the do best but done the best way they can !
They can do it as Inferno proved.
I hate to be critical, and indeed who the hell am I to criticize ?, as I love the band have done man and boy and always will do.
Lemmy is one of the greatest living Englishmen. As a musician and lyricist he is massively under appreciated - a genuine rock genius.
That said it does sometimes ‘feel’ like he’s said ‘that’s good enough’ or inspiration was slightly lacking.
Mikkey Dee is on the drums and is absolutely solid, he is one of, if not the, finest hard rock drummers in the world and this album does nothing to diminish his standing.
Philip Campbell in on the guitar. Solid job as ever but slightly underwhelming in the licks and riffs area.
Just needed some hook lines to mark the songs out
When is it released ? = September 1 2008

Should I Buy This CD ?
If you’re a fan then definitely yes - buy it online or better still support your local high street shop.
If you’re new to the band then this is perhaps not the best place to start.

Overall Summary in one line
It’s more Kiss of Death than Inferno in my humble opinion.

    Rod,
I heard the album last week and would agree with much that you say, I will probably end up going to see them again this year despite it all.
Got to go, there’s a famous guitarist on the phone waiting to give me another scoop

Hope you enjoy the gig and good luck with your scoops :)
If the famous guitarist lets you know about a new album, get him to spell the title out for you - just in case

    Rod and LB,

Nothing tackles the cleaning of the Coven bat mobile better than a nice Motorhead T-shirt so we welcome any concert that delivers the possibility of showroom sparkle :)

p.s. you can keep your Barts Rod, they’re not up to the job :)

    WoE,
I’ve told you before about the sacred Motorhead t-shirt, they’re not to be made fun of.
I must tell Rod that should I go and see them I shall have to charge for any t-shirts this year, what with the credit crunch and all that.

    LB,

You mean they actually charge you for these? :) Why not buy a plain white T and do a spot of potato printing….. now that would be art and we’d never dream of using art for the pigeon splattered Coven chassis. Try to keep it from Rod, it’ll only end up as a bun fight because he’d want the matching quilt cover :)

I remove the time-honoured burden of having to come back with 2 t-shirts !
Unless of course they have some new, different and very impressive artwork then that’s a different matter …
    Medium please !
    Rod
    PS
Due to the credit crunch I would be unable to refund your expenses ;)

Well, i’ve listened to the album and i can guarantee you, it’s a pretty good one. For shure “inferno” has its advantages (it’s a powerful album, track by track), but “motörizer” follows the motörhead line, wich means: always releasing great albums!
    Lemmy for President!

I’d agree to an extent on the track stengths but having heard the album several times I think ‘When The Eagle Screams’ and ‘The Thousand Names Of God’ are two of the best tracks they’ve done and I’ve been there since 1976 (Lemmy bought me my first JD +coke). They like to record with immediacy so sometimes they put out an unpolished track or two but its fast, its tight and it should be played really loud as usual. The best driving band in the world.

thanks for the comment and welcome to the site.
Great to hear from a veteran I guess I clock in about 78 to 1979 - not sure, it was so long ago !

I agree that it needs a few listens, I make that caveat in the post, all good albums do.
I pains me to be critical but it always seems a shame when they blow, shall we say, a little cold.

The best driving band in the world.
I’d probably remove the word ‘driving’ from that sentence ;)

    Thanks again SW
    Cheers
