Mark Ronson ~ GQ best Dressed Man 2009
A volumous thud on the Goldeneye Welcome doormat proved to be the latest edition of Gentlemen’s Quarterly - a special issue to boot
The 50 Best Dressed Men in Britain
We’ve covered this before when Daniel Craig won the award and indeed a while back when Clive Owen was the winner - I note the difference in blog posts from then to now - no wonder it seemed easier back then !
Aficionados of gentlemanly style and regular readers will spot immediately how unfortunate the picture of Mark Ronson is on the left. Outwardly stylish and no doubt fashionable, sadly I’m unable to get passed the white socks and short trousering !
Anyhoo, GQ have spoken and he is this years winner, here are the runners up
The Top Ten GQ Best Dressed Men
-
1: Mark Ronson
2: Guy Ritchie
3: Tom Ford
4: Daniel Craig
5: Prince Charles
6: Lucian Freud
7: David Furnish
8: David Cameron
9: Daniel Day Lewis
10: David Beckham
It’s a funny old list, but then I guess it’s impossible for them to make it truly definitive. They need to shake it up otherwise it wouldn’t change.
DC (despite our very own Jordan’s comments about him in his shorts) won it the other year and his dress sense is still the same so in theory he should probably win it again as Mark Ronson is still dressing the same !
Needless to say, the real point is that once again I failed to make the list - which, quite frankly, is no surprise - I’m simply not rich enough ![]()
I’ve always said that not having much spare cash is no excuse for looking scruffy and I stick by that. A sense of style and some judicious buying and anybody nowadays can look well turned out.
However, to look truly smart, certainly for a gentleman - it’s easier and cheaper for women - it really does cost a huge amount of money.
My chosen style is really beyond my income level so I either have to settle for a poor imitation or change my image altogether.
A change of image has been brought up on the site before, but once again there are limitations. Despite my protestations and wild claims about being the Peter Pan of Great Coates I have to start thinking about dressing my age
So, something has to change ! I’m bored ! I suppose I could redistribute money once spent on claret toward a new wardrobe (no jokes about Savile Row now being an option please
)
Perhaps I ought to buy a brown hooded habit and rope belt to go with my new monkish lifestyle !
Make the effort
Rod

I am with you on this one. Young Mr. Ronson doesn’t look like the best dressed. He is hip, to be sure, but I don’t see the classiness I would want in a Best Dressed Gent.
Alas, poor Urick..er…Rod. Spring stirs things up, and one must acknowledge that winter, though a necessary season, is hard on the emotional health and well-being. Lady Dedlock, of “Bleak House,” said it best: I am bored with the weather. I am bored with my life. I am bored with myself. Dressing one’s age doesn’t mean that you must begin wearing tea stained shirts, and pants that won’t close. You just lose some of the silly items that youth is wont to wear. Our beloved DC dresses his age, but still manages to look quite wonderful. I wouldn’t opt for the monk’s frock; I hear the itchy fabric is not conducive to one’s comfort.

Who said Dickens wasn’t relevant today !!
That’s me to a T sometimes !
DC does indeed look smart, the £3,000 suit is exactly a setback in the sartorial stakes
There’s much in what you say - perhaps the hair shirt route is one best avoided !

Rod,
We hear what you say and must agree. Don’t worry though, just swap cultures in the sartorial sense. Try to avoid the Rain Forest tribal gear at this stage, especially when cycling
but other than that be creative and give the kaftan a go. We witches love robes of all kinds, in fact our latest batch of vintage Japanese silks have arrived and we were thrilled with the contents. Rest assured we don’t see you in full kimono and certainly not with socks and sandals
It saddens us to read that the suit you most desire is out of financial reach…. you should re-assess your bank balance and make savings elsewhere in order to save up for it. Give up smoking for good and buying expensive DVDs for starters. Somewhere an elegant hand made suit has your name on it…… seems a shame to waste a finely honed physique like yours on a pair of tracky bottoms and a hoodie

Mark actually looks very cool in the trench coat and this 60’s inspired look. The white socks turn ups and loafers show a real aficinado of 60’s inspired fashion. Very Jean Paul Belmondo cool not a Michael Jackson inspired look.
