Look Ye Also While Life Lasts !
Look Ye Also While Life Lasts !
A beautiful line and one I’ve known for many a year, as each year passes time and experience seem to increase its power and poignancy
Here’s a few words and also Pictures of the Week . . .
Look Ye Also While Life Lasts !
Is a phrase most readily associated with the famous angling writer and book illustrator Denys Watkins-Pitchford better known to those who love his work as BB.
His book Confessions of a Carp Fisher is a beautiful little book and was the first ‘expensive’ first edition book I bought - I paid £60 for it which seemed like a fortune to pay for one secondhand book, especially back then.
Inside the beginning of that book, verso the frontis, is this:
The wonder of the world
The beauty and the power,
The shapes of things,
Their colours, lights and shades,
These I saw.
Look ye also while life lasts
Not his words, as most assume, but those from a gravestone . . . even better !
I read a lot into this photograph below, it’ll sound indulgent I know but there’s usually a reason why I take certain photographs, and I don’t take that many - you’d be surprised how few sometimes.
In the background you’ll see my favourite tree standing tall, proud and on its own.
In the foreground you’ll see the sad sight of a once mighty and impressive tree which was finally downed after a long lifetime of enduring storms and gales.
It finally yielded to the inevitable . . . the world carries on but even the strongest of living things bow out sooner or later . . .
Make the most of life and to use a favourite phrase . . . Look ye also while life lasts

Look ye also while life lasts
Boys will be boys - you can be as PC as you like but there are fundamental differences between boys and girls, every boy wanted to fire this 7.62mm multi-barrel mini gun which was aboard HMS Grimsby, girls weren’t bothered - one little boy who was slightly older than the rest also asked to have a go

A Boy Doing What Boys Do Best !
We’re coming off the back of a cold and snowy spell and personally speaking I’ve enjoyed it - I’m not sure how much I’d have enjoyed it had I to commute to work or was already behind with the heating bills but speaking purely selfishly - I loved it !
Here’s a lovely early morning river scene, it’s a spot a walk by on a very regular basic and never tire of it.
This was taken at daybreak and with the snow, ice and freezing mist it looked even more beautiful than normal

A Winter River Scene
I’ve never been a late riser but the new regime of not drinking and smoking means I no longer go to bed around 1am to 2am so I’m up even earlier thank normal, although the other day I thought 3.30am was just a bit too early ![]()
Anyhoo, it means I’ve done of all my emails etc, taken care of my ablutions and cleaned the house before it’s even light - that gives me chance for an extra walk in the day before the sun’s even up !

The Best Time of the Day
I hope regulars will forgive yet another tombstone but it caught my eye, I thought it strange and slightly amusing in a macabre way.
It marks the grave of Henry Mitchell who died in 1901 but interestingly straight after his name, before anything else is mentioned it says:
Late of H.M. Inland Revenue
I’ve no doubt this is because he was very well known locally because of his position but it does seem to be a strange way to commemorate a life and one naturally wonders how many people feel endeared thus.

Here’s me looking out of my bedroom window at La Casa Goldeneye - you’ll note something quite exceptional . . . yes indeedy . . .

The look of concentration on the child’s face is incredible. Living history, suits me of course! ‘’Get him for the WW2 workshop!”
Although I dislike the snow generally, it does make for remarkable photographs.
Lovely well done.

Veronica,
thank you - like you my love of snow is selective, mine also very selfish, if it wasn’t for photography I’d have no time at all for it

Jordan,
pleased you liked that one - it’s my favourite on there.
What you said about kids with guns reminded of a woman who was bringing her son and daughter up in the middle of nowhere, home schooling, no TV or magazines, comics etc.
She wanted them to develop naturally not be influenced by society etc so no guns or sailor suits for the boy, no dolls or frilly pink dresses for the girl.
She said despite her best efforts the girl walked around with a cushion fashioned into a baby like doll and the boy made guns out of wood !
I guess we’re hardwired . . .

I did n’t allow my infant pupils to have guns or make them out of lego …..
so they used their hands and fingers . I could n’t remove those.

Veronica,
that’s very interesting indeed, I think it’s just the way we are - we haven’t changed in essence since the Caveman days . . .

If you dont mind me saying - that bedroom window of yours is in a need of a few running repairs. No wonder you are wearing a hoodie you must be freezing

Minnie,

I have to agree it’s, as the estate agent said to me, ‘authentically rustic’
I bought it mainly for the views
