How to Start a Simple Kitchen Garden
You’d be forgiven for thinking you’re suffering (most of my readers suffer) from Deja Vu or that you’re trapped in some interminable Groundhog Day situation but it’s Kitchen Garden time again I’m afraid
I always start these posts with an apology to those good enough to keep coming back to read my inexorable scribblings and today is no different. I apologise to those who find it boring but I like it and so do many others it seems so here’s an update on how The Goldeneye River Cottage Project is proceeding …
“How is it proceeding then - put us out of our misery” comes the shout from the pound seats
Full steam ahead is how it’s proceeding

Overview of back corner
The above shows one corner and features, left to right, yellow beans, peas and in the pots radishes.

Pea Pods
Here are the pea plants a bit closer. The pods seem to have appeared almost over night

Fresh Yellow Beans
The yellow beans are turning into quite a crop, I’ve had to support some plants as the weight of the beans appears to be too great for them ! I should be trying my first ones soon, possibly this week.
Incidentally, the courgette plants are supplying me with a large fresh courgette every day !
I have 2 varieties, a normal green one and a yellowish one. Hat tip to LB for the initial grown on seeds !

Vegetable Garden
The above shots shows another segment of the Urban Kitchen Garden (I rank #2 behind Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in Google for the term Urban Kitchen Garden
) You’ll see some more beans on the right and broccoli and sprouts in the rows coming on nicely

Butternut Squash Plants
The Butternut Squash Plants are growing like the national debt but no sign of any fruit yet.
Never tried growing these before so it will be interesting to see how they go - they do at least look very healthy.

Savoy Cabbage
This looks ready to me but being ignorant I’m not sure. I’m tempted to harvest it before a caterpillar invasion does

Golden Gourmet Onion
The onions are fab and very nearly ready. In fact they look ready but LB says I need to wait until the foliage wilts fully so I’m patiently waiting. The above onion is so large that that it would require 2 hands to cup it ! No smutty remarks please
So there we go folks as you can see The Dullest Bachelor on Wybers Wood puts his time to good use ![]()
I find it satisfying, relaxing and very rewarding, it is one of the best things I’ve done and I thank all those instrumental in it’s birth and transformation and thank also all those who seem to be interested in joining me on the journey via this site - if you’re bored with it let me know and I’ll not weary your eyes and patience with it again.
Regards to all
Rod

Rod,
A great post, the cabbage and onion photos are great, I’d get that cabbage eaten if the head is firm enough. All looks really well.
Good work fella

Rod,
It keeps you out of trouble, for that alone we must be grateful
We vote the Goldeneye kitchen garden stays.

Rod,
You are still there aren’t you? Your recent silence points to one of several things…… you’ve found a hot women, you’re far away on an exotic holiday, you’re on Cleethorpes beach every day til sunset, you’re gardening like the clappers and just don’t have time for anything else, you’re poorly sick after a particularly vicious mosquito bite…. or writers block?
Fear not dear friend, the Witches will continue regardless, you just sit down and take it easy…..
Whilst on the subject of the famed kitchen garden, we take it everyone’s coriander plants are flowering and producing the first signs of seed heads. This is good news since LB told us all ages ago that these will make for a fine quality spice. Our butternut squash are at the same stage as yours Rod so looks like we’ll have to wait a while longer for the flowers. It’s exciting stuff this kitchen gardening.

Dear All,
Here’s an interesting thing……. this week disaster struck the Coven laptop department, yes one of the sisterhood had been over stretching the cable which finally gave up and parted company with the mother ship. ‘Do not touch that thing’, we cried, ‘or you could short circuit the laptop altogether’…. well we didn’t exactly think of that all by ourselves but it did seem like a good argument so we went along with it
So folks off we went to a well known national PC shop who told us it would cost around £60 upwards to replace this unit. We didn’t buy it, we came home and researched online until we found one for £17, an exact replica which arrived in the post this morning 24 hours after we placed the order.

p.s. we could do a review of last night’s Women doing a Man’s Job thing if you like?
A better review might be in the pipeline after we see the show about the WI and their campaign to legalise brothels in this country, which is due to air this weekend…. it’s not all scones and Jerusalem then?

I am here but not in a cyberspace kind of way !
The new post explains all - sorry to hear of your laptop problems but don’t talk to me about computers
