How to Play Seek and Destroy By Metallica
How to play the introduction to the mighty Seek and Destroy by Metallica on guitar
Metallica - Seek and Destroy Guitar Tab
An absolute modern classic of a rock track and a lick that all budding rock guitarists should have in their arsenal. It’s pretty straight forward and should present no problems for intermediate players or beginners willing to practise, as it’s mostly likely to be used by less experienced players, it’s very slightly simplified. You can play around with it to get the true feel.
Guitar and amp set to maximum distortion !
The real key to it is emphasis and technique worked into specific notes, I’ll try and work you through it.
Here is the tablature - sheet music:
Into Lick Played 8 X
E|| ———————————|———————————
B|| ———————————|———————————
G||———-7h8-7——————|———————–5———
D||————————–7h8-7–|————–5————-7—-
A|| -0—0—————–0———|–0—8—7——–7———–
E|| ———————————|———————————
The open A string wants plenty of heavy muting and requires striking hard.
Make the hammer on quick or omit totally and just play 8 to 7. Both of these notes want ’squealing’ with plenty of attack.
Mute the second part of the riff but let the last 2 notes ring out with plenty of emphasis (catch string with thumb edge after picking to create a ‘harmonic squeal’)
Riff 2 is straight forward, again work on emphasis
E||———————————
B||———————————
G||-9—7——-7——————-
D||———9——-9—8—7sl5—-
A||———————————
E||———————————
Rhythm Part - Played 3 X
E|| —————————–|—————————-
B|| —————————–|—————————-
G||—————————–|—————————-
D||—————5–7–5–7—-|—————————-
A|| —————5–7–5–7—-|—————7–5———
E|| -0–0–0–0——————|–0–0–0–0———-7–6–
Heavy palm muting on the open E
There you go ! How to play the classic hard rock riff Seek and Destroy
We may do more depending on how this goes - enjoy - and remember - just because your fingers have started to bleed does not mean it’s time to stop practising !

Rod,
This takes me back! What this needs is a ‘You Tube’ of you playing it so WoE for example can make sense of it. I am sure she is a die hard Metallica fan at heart.
Drop Cliff and James Last witches and allow yourself to be seduced by the dulcet tones of Messers Kilmister et al.
It really does make sense!

This means buying a digital camcorder !
I’m adverse to the expense, indeed I keep thinking about it - but where’s it going to lead !
I hope yo can now play the above ?

I guess i must be!
Had a little trouble with the:
Open A string wants plenty of heavy muting and requires striking hard.
Make the hammer on quick or omit totally and just play 8 to 7. Both of these notes want ’squealing’ with plenty of attack.
But after your guide, its sorted. Maybe could do with help on a bit of ‘Y.M’s - Dreaming’
Where are WoE??

What a classic track ! I was working through Trilogy Suite Opus 5 last night - living nightmare but coming good !
Where are WoE??
Don’t know, probably brewing trouble up somewhere - else preparing for Hallowe’en
Best

One of the best rock chicks must be the lady in DC’s Whitesnake ‘Here we Go again’ and ‘Is This Love’ Video’s. What a body and classy too.
And she can do the splits!

Jordan,
Nice one.
R, Can we have Suzi Quatro included, yes even I can remember as far back as the 1970s and very early 80s.
