Have Health & Safety Regulations Gone Too Far ?

Health and Safety !
3 simple words the seem to rule our lives nowadays, whilst it’s obviously important - has it gone too far ?
Yes, it’s bloody ridiculous and enough to make your blood boil !

I worked in engineering once and was very mindful of Health and Safety - I had to be, if I made mistakes with some things people could die or be seriously injured !
Today however, I read that Jack has been banned from climbing his beanstalk in pantomime due to H&S regulations !
Also today a single father has been banned from a swimming pool because he has 2 sons and the H&S idiots deemed him unable to look after 2 sons on his own !

Whatever happened to common sense and personal responsibility ?
Why does somebody have to have a training course to stand on a small step up that 1.5 feet high ?

It’s all about getting sued I suppose buy what’s generated this ‘compensation culture’
If I were a judge, god forbid, I’d throw most of these cases out.

Case: Tripped on a paving stone I want £100,000
Verdict: Dismissed - watch where you going next time.

There must be a lot of us out there who shake their heads in disbelief every time this nonsense makes the news.
Why are we not listened to - who really thinks all this regulation is a good thing.
We’re going to hell in a hand cart and everything that happens seems to defy belief.

I know I’m ranting but when are the government etc going to have a reality check ?

A simple lack of common sense is gradually destroying the western world.
Basic financial common sense from individuals, bankers and government would have avoided the credit crunch.
A little bit of the ‘just get on with it’ spirit would stop all these nonsensical legal cases.
Regulation is strangling business and public services causing them to require huge amounts of extra cash simply to do less.

I cannot be the only one who believes something has to change and soon !
All the best

I completely agree. We live in a nanny state now, and even as a member of the younger generation, I can see that they’ve gone too far. Our school now does less than one school trip a year, whereas there used to be at least 6.. That just says it all for me.

    Jen,
thanks for leaving a comment and welcome to the site - hope you’ll return.
It’s sad to think that school trips are a thing of the past - especially given their potential for children who wouldn’t otherwise get the chance to visit different places.

    It’s all such a pathetic mess !

This is not entierly ture many companies use health and safety as a way of getting out of certain activities for example children playing with conquers in school, health and safety was blamed for this however it was nothing todo with health and safety it was the own schools choice so you may find that the bean stalk was nothing to do with health and safety either and same might be said for the school trips. As it many save them money but make people unhappy so they need an excuse so unfortunately its health and safety they blame.

As someone who has had to carry out risk assessments at work to incorporate school visits I can tell you it’s a nightmare! You have to look at the worst case scenario every time! e.g. an activity using paper and scissors would rate highly because of the risk of injury through scissors! I was even told by one head that it should be pointed out in said assessment that a FLOATING exhibit (the clue is in the name) is actually on water and carries a high risk of a child falling in and drowning!….. It’s not heath and safety gone mad, It’s the blame claim culture we reside in these days I am sorry to say! If there were less greedy people around there would be less need for such stringent health and safety regulations.

    Mrs HH,
I would also blame a lot on the law and the courts - they’ve indulged all this petty litigation and created the ‘Compensation Culture’
If more cases were thrown out . . .
