Hailstone Damage in the Kitchen Garden Vegetable Plot

A freak hail storm put the fear of Mithras into your host this week.
Was I worried about the roof on the house, storm damage, electrical damage from the lightning ?
No . . . My Kitchen Garden !

I don’t actually recall ever seeing such a violent downpour as descended upon the Goldeneye Grounds that day - quite what Gods I’d angered I can’t say - perhaps I’ve been visiting too many christian churches :)
Damage to plants caused by hail stormI thought I’d record the moment on microchip but upon opening the rear door to do so both my legs and the kitchen floor got an immediate and thorough soaking.

All I could do was pace up and down and wait for respite - I now know how the expectant father feels marching up and down the corridor of the maternity ward.

You’ll see on the left the turnip seedlings and the remnants of the hail stones - note their biblical proportions !

In the end all was well, whilst quite a few of the smaller plants got flattened they have ‘come good’
The whole thing was rather stressful for me - being used to a stress free life !

What a difference a day makes though - next day I went from wet legs to a sunburnt back !
The expansion to the front garden is now complete with a great deal of preparation and mass planting.
I could well have over done it I think - I get the feeling I’m going to be overwhelmed with produce !

I am incredibly happy, and dare I say not a little proud, with the results so far. Could the kitchen garden be a substitute for other things in life ?
I seem to have more time and interest in it than I could ever have imagined.

The sun has been working wonders on me as well as the veg - I’ve taken to topless gardening whenever the sun is out so I’ve got an superb tan !
The only problem is the tan whilst superb is superb in varied patches ! The process of blending in the white patches with the red and brown patches could prove problematic
Still we all need a goal in life and now I have one !

This is the second time in a couple of weeks I’ve come a cropper at the hands of the sun and once again had to be rescued by a good samaritan armed with after sun cream !
I had the sense to apply some Piz Buin, albeit in a haphazard fashion, today which is good news for half-wits as it shows even idiots can learn . . . eventually

Here is a picture of one corner to show you how it’s going. You’ll see:
Broad Beans, Borlotti Beans, Tomatoes, Herbs, Parsnips and Sweet corn

Shall we all sing along: “Green acres, that’s the place for me. Farm livin’…”

Thinking about it, probably best that it isn’t :)

    Rod,

It’ll be frogs and locusts next, be prepared :) We have no doubt your vegetables will be superb, it’s just the aesthetics left to work on…. still, the hanging gardens of Goldeneye towers weren’t built in a day sadly. Have you still got the pond or is it attracting too many sharp toothed amphibians like the pool side inhabitants at Hugh Hefner’s?

    WoE

p.s. no hail around Coven territory, probably only affected the northeners :)

we’ll see how the whole thing goes - it should be packed and look fantastic if all the seeds come good.
Both ponds are now raised beds, one fulll of curly kale the other courgettes !
    Cheers
