Grimsby Photographer ~ Portrait Photography
Portrait Photography in Grimsby
Portrait photography sounds, to me at least, to be all about those horrific school portraits some severely harassed photographer has to do.
I wouldn’t fancy it myself but I don’t mind taking portrait shots of my own choosing . . .
There’s some pretty raw work in Grimsby masquerading as ‘professional photography’ and there are plenty of people on Facebook et al who label themselves as photographers.
Weddings and Event Photography a speciality ![]()
I wonder what some people must think when they get what they’ve paid good money for ?
I wonder how many people are even dissatisfied ?
Perhaps people either expect little or don’t realise how poor some actually are !
I was moved to jot all this down after seeing a poster advertising a Grimsby Photographer and his portrait packages - top quality work at bargain prices ![]()
It looks like good work if people are paying him those prices for photographic sessions.
I’m not going to do a name and shame but it wouldn’t be unfair to do so, the quality of some of the work some people charge for is surprising to say the least - I wonder how much work they actually get ?
Anyhoo, it’s easy to criticise especially without showing your own hand so . . .
Here’s a portrait I took in my studio, took it a while ago but processed it last night.
I’d like to do a lot more of this sort of photography though, sadly, Grimsby doesn’t seem to be the best of all places to try it

Photographically yours,
Rod

Rod,
I dont pretend to be good at portrait photography and whats more I dont really have an interest in it. My photography is all about whats in the natural world and gives me great pleasure but like you I have seen some self confessed photographers who don’t have the first idea of how to take a portrait shot. I went to see a friend of mine a few years ago. We got chatting over a cup of tea when there was a knock at his door. My mate answered the door and returned with this guy carrying a folder and a light meter. My mate told me he was having a surprise photo of his children done for his wife. the so called photographer said to my mate would it be possible to move a couple of items of furniture and this was done to the guys requirements then the light meter came out. My mate knew I am a keen photographer but said nothing to the guy in his living room. The thing he did next was unbelievable since the room is south facing with all the natural light you could ever want . The guy walked across and shut the curtains putting the room in almost complete darkness and the said to my mate yes I think we will need a light there another one there along with some flash. He then opened the curtains and said I have seen all I need and asked if we would like to see some of his shots. to cut a long story short I would be ashamed to put my name to it, it was rubbish. He gave my mate with a price list and his card and left. When my mate returned to the room, I just burst out laughing and said to him what I thought.
As I said I am no portrait expert but I do know about the use of light and when to use flash, reflectors and the like This guy never had the first idea whats more I dont think he even knew what a light meter was for.
As you can imagine Rod my mate never gave him the job he ended up going to a studio in Lincoln with his children but got a first class job done which yes was a higher price than he bargained for but as he said at the end of the day you get what you pay for (most of the time).
Regards.
Graham.

Graham,
portraits are OK if you’ve got the model, you need somebody interesting or ver attractive otherwise they’re simply boring - I prefer ‘full length’ shots really.
What a story that is, there really are some chancers out there, I’m surprised so many people fall for it, after all you only need to look at their work an dcompare it to others.
Ultimately, as you say Graham, you don’t get quality for nothing.
Thnaks for chipping in Graham.
All the best
Rod
