Neville,
I believe they intended to divert the Freshney into the Haven for many years but funding was an issue.
The idea may well have been in existence for over a 100 years, if my memory serves, Little Caotes farmers and landowners did very well out of the compensation package once they finally diverted the river to ease the silted up Haven.

It’s always been about money - even then !

Just to reawaken this thread I thought you might like a quote from The Haven Improvement Act of 1796:

“………also from all and every or any of the Springs or Pools of Water, usually called or known by the Name of Blow Wells lying by the Side of or near to any of the Drains or Watercourses within the Parishes of Great Grimsby and Little Coates aforefaid, which communicate or discharge their Waters into the said Haven, and also from the several Springs, Pools, or Blow Wells lying by the Side of or near to the said Beck called Freshney, in the said Parishes of Little Coates and Great Coates,……”

The whole document is a facinating read in my opinion.

thanks for the comment and welcome to the site.
Only a few houses in my street were affected, thankfully not mine, I don’t know if any of those few would want to go on air, they are not well known to me personally (lucky them), it’s probably worth getting your feet wet (groan - crushing pun intended but not excusable) and knocking on a few doors.

It was sad to see the photos of the area, where I lived for several years. In in ordinary wet spell my back garden was under water so I suppose it was a disaster waiting to happen!! Hope the weather improves soon.

Sorry to say the old tin bath wasn’t much use when the river Warng expanded and took in my flat at about 9am. on monday, I saved as much as possible with the help of my upstairs neighbours but had to give up when it got too deep for safety at 10.30. After a quick change into dry clothes I did open my shop . Business as usual!
