Great Grimsby Day

When is Great Grimsby Day ? - Why Today of Course !
Don’t tell you didn’t even know about it

Yes folks it is indeed that hallowed time of year, scandalously yet to be a national bank holiday of course, but a big national event non-the-less.

Such is the importance of the day our local MP , one Austin Mitchell Esq, will be making one of his rare appearances in London to promote said event.
My informants tell me he shall be at Waterloo Train Station bedecked (pun intended but inexcusable) in fisherman’s clothing - I’ll take a wild guess at a sowester (? spelling)

Free food will be dished out so if you’re hungry, or desperate, get yourself down there.

I have yet to finalize my plans to celebrate this historic day, possibly a visit to our local landmark, modelled on the Campanille in Venice, Grimsby Dock Tower

My former employers seem to be at the bottom of it all. Youngs Seafoods nee Ross Foods.
They have started a big marketing campaign including TV ads based around the town, I’ve yet to see them myself but it gives me something to look forward to in life.
I’ll not call Young’s as they’re a fine company - they paid for this house after all !

Anyhoo I must dash and put the bunting out.
The rain has dampened (groan) enthusiasm amongst my neighbours for the street party I was planning.
Well, they cited the weather but I suspect it’s the thought of socializing with me that put them all off :)

Cheerio then and don’t forget to wish all you meet a …
Happy Great Grimsby Day

    Rod,

A bright yellow sowester is one of the few hats we don’t possess - pity because from time to time we find ourselves yearning. We wish Austin well in his quest to bring Grimsby to the attention of the great British public. The marketing campaign overlooked the possibilities of your good self dressed as a ‘Depp’ pirate which was very short sighted in our view. Still, don’t let that stop you from playing your part…. we will build a float to carry you through the streets of Lincolnshire although not necessarily today… will the message be lost if we aim for say, April?

    Rod,
Aren’t you confusing it with yesterday’s ‘most depressing day of the year’ ?

I’ll avoid the float idea - I suspect it might make the target of fruit and veg throwers not to mention unpleasant children with supersoakers !

My brief period of Depp style facial hair marked the highpoint of aspirational JD lookalike wishes - 5, much needed, minutes with a razor brought that chapter to a close.
I have considered re opening said chapter but remain unconvinced

    Rod,

You need ‘roughing’ up a bit if you want pirate status… you’re probably more of a Bloom than a Depp. Speaking of which have you metamorphed into your new look yet and does it include a flouncy white shirt?

We hope the fine weather brought many a curious person to the Grimsby area today, as if it needed more of the same :)

too much time has been invested in smoothing my numerous real rough edges to consider a purely cosmetic roughening up I afraid.
Flouncy white shirts are always in stock here and I can confirm that aforementioned garment would indeed play a significant role in the new image - should the decision to go ahead prove positive.

Not sure about the visitor numbers here at GY, your host found himself out of town today, probably a good thing as being a Freeman of the Borough of Great Grimsby I may have been called upon to enact civic duties on this illustrious day
kissing ribbons and cutting babies and such like :)

    Rod,

We’ve told the all girl Cosmetic Roughening Up Company that you’re simply not interested…. put away those fishnets we said, it’ll do you no good…’but we’re trawler women’ they said, the CRUP are nextdoor :)

Onwards and into Spring so that we may all benefit from the bulb fields, catkins and rare sightings of your latest white shirt, ruffles ruffling in the wind (let’s hope they are ruffles and not just puckered seams) :)
