Girls Aloud St Trinian’s Right or Wrong

The all girl pop band, Girls Aloud, are to make a cameo appearance in a remake of the St Trinian’s films.
Those familiar with the original films and the genre of ‘dressing up’ that it spawned will readily guess how they will be dressed !
Is it right though ?

Regulars will know I’m far from prudish and would probably have expected to see the photo below but I have never sat easy with it. It seems inappropriate to me - especially today when young girls are already subjected to a barrage of sexual imagery and pressure.

Girls Aloud St Trinian's

Girls Aloud in St Trinian’s Schoolgirl Uniforms

Maybe I am being a little politically correct, god forbid, but there are aspects to this that have always disturbed me.

    Is it just me ?
Is it all just a bit of innocent fun ?
Is it right to turn the image of a schoolgirl into a sexual object ?

Update 26.12.07
With the film opening to rave reviews and some of the official publicity photos being released I thought an update may be appropriate.
There does not seem to have been much, if any, ado about this aspect of the movie.
They have kept to the original formula and only dressed the older girls in stockings and short skirts, and they are all well over 16.
Here is one of the official pics showing how they’ve differed the style of dress across all the characters from the movie

My position hasn’t really changed, I’m not against it or an old fuddy duddy, far from it in fact, but it still does not feel quite right to me - not bad just not quite right

    Rod,

Why file it under the title of ‘Hot Chicks’, if you are not au fait with it?

Shall I order you a pipe and some slippers to go with your gardening literature?!!!!!!!!
I think you are growing old disgracefully :)

I did think about the category when I did it.
    2 reasons:
Most men probably think they are hot chicks
Too many things go in the uncategorized section.

I thought I was getting younger but you could just be right :(

FF – RC is definitely aging. Have you not reviewed his Gallery pics. Once the rock legend, but no more. Definitely a pipe and slippers man!

RC – Why are you moaning about if Girls Allowed should dress as school girls? There was nothing wrong with the St Trinians films in the 1950’s. Men will perv like they always do, like they haven’t seen a young pretty girl in a short skirt before!!

Yawn, Yawn, this article was in last weeks OK magazine, not even in this weeks. Keep updated RC, you are very ‘last weeks news’.
Do you need some more ‘topic’ ideas for you to work with? I am sure FF, WoE or myself can point you in the right direction.

    Girls,

We’ve managed to get our hands on a full sized Daniel Craig cardboard cutout dressed to thrill as 007 … we carried him through town then promptly ordered the Coven dwellers to set another place at the table! Always worth asking at your local shops if you like a certain poster. The woman serving us said she’d carted home the tardis last week!

Wonder if Rod would allow a ‘cosmetic corner’ here on the blog because we’ve recently found some interesting additions to the Witches beauty bag …. (well more of a sack really). Doubtless being young and gorgeous you won’t need them but we need all the help we can get so just had to have the latest eyebrow taming kit with its coloured waxes and tiny brushes … sweet, not to mention the marbled powder from Laura Geller, marvellous stuff.

Enough of these pleasantries, it’s time do some brick laying.

With age comes wisdom, or so they say, perhaps that’s why I’m agreeing with the girls !

    Jordan,
my apologies, I am not familiar with OK magazine I’m afraid.
I’ll have to add it to my reading list.
It wasn’t for news more the principal. I am all for looking at young girls in short skirts providing the suggestion is not that they are under 16.
That said, any girl with her own hair would probably seem young to me nowadays :(

Once the rock legend, but no more
I just look craggy now :)

WoE - Indeed I think a ‘cosmetic counter’ would be a great idea. But maybe we would have to hack into RC’s site as I think he may have one or two issues with it!
Age isn’t an issue; we ladies can be gorgeous and glamorous at any age, whereas men just wither away and moan a lot, (mainly about woman dressed as school girls, when they are not perving at them that is!)
I myself had my eyebrows waxed for the first time last week and had an eye lash perm and tint. Grand stuff!!

I should be carefull at that age as well, at least try for over 20, with your fast approaching years, you could get yourself into bother, and its not good for your heart! :-o

One night last winter I saw a stunning young girl, micro skirt, crop top, wonderbra, the works - about 19ish I guess - gorgeous.

My first thought, and this is true, “she must be bloody freezing”
At that point I knew it was all over bar the shouting.

I am happy to have factual reviews or interesting etc on anything cosmetic or female based, I can do a guest post for the author.

Yes, those young-uns certainly must catch their death in those micro minis.

What I can’t understand is this craze at the moment for girls to wear shorts with white legs, it’s not a good look, why do they want to do that? And another thing, why do they wear jeans then a dress as well, surely this must be a hindrance in today’s society??!!

Why don’t they want to look pretty and girly?

    Jordan,

I agree, the jeans and dresses look awful.
The things that are beyond me, are the tops that look like maternity attire, fashion is going to the dogs.
Does anyone know whose idea this has been?

Just off to dress my 13 year old daughter in a maternity top, mini skirt and stockings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shorts with white legs, I’ll tell you what’s worse. Saw a hot chick wearing tight denim shorts, always works , classic !
Not this time, tanned legs ? No black footless tights - she looked like Max Wall !

As to those 1960s style printed tops/dresses/cross between/crap that are everywhere, they look like garish maternity tops. No girl can wear them, if you’re slim they hang on you like a bin liner, if you’re fuller figured you look pregnant - ditch them girls !

Why don’t they want to look pretty and girly?
    Why indeed ?
When you look at the options women have got I cannot understand why some go down the road they do

Also, why do those who shouldn’t - flaunt it and those that should - wear tracksuits ?

I rushed to queue for hours at TopShop to buy everything in the Kate Moss range – NOT!! Why would anyone want to look like her? Do they come with added accessories i.e. A junkie, scruffy, slimy, waste of space boyfriend and some white powder??!!
To go in a Pub/Club to find everyone dressed the same as yourself, icky! Why would you want to do that?!
I think the maternity tops are terrible, maybe these girls are getting their selves ready for the inevitable that will happen soon as they reach puberty!

nice to see you’ve not lost that cutting edge :)
I’ve never seen anything in Kate Moss, as to that sack of *&%$ that’s her appendage - don’t get me started !

You’re right about the inevitable consequences for those that wear these tops, possibly a special offer is in order, buy three get a buggy !

You’ll be pleased to hear of a sartorial bargain that was had here this week.
TK Maxx again, the only place in town that has trousers in my size, excellent pair of jeans still with the Disel price tags of £150 in - mine for £29 !!!!!

    Keeping it real!

Why can’t people say what they think? Why do people get offended when I do this?! Do you agree? The world would be so much better if this was so.
I expect my friends to tell me if I look a bugger in something rather than saying, ‘Oh you look lovely.’ Honesty is the best policy (Obviously not in politics or war, but don’t get me started on that!!)

    Maybe another topic for you?

please do keep it real, everyone appreciates it.
I always say what I think and keep things honest as well. Some people draw breath when they hear some of the things I say but I like to think I am just saying what others may be thinking but dare not utter.

I often think it would be easier and more convenient to tell a half lie from time to time - but I can’t, so………

    Jordan,

Rule out the margin for error and never ask anyone for approval when it comes to clothing. The Witches care little about what people think of our dress sense but have a sneaking suspicion that our purple hosiery and flowing gowns might not be to everyones taste. This summer if we can shoehorn ourselves into it, we shall be wearing a little number from the 50s…. perhaps we shall team it with our Japanese lacey leg warmers who knows!

Rod - politically correct - is that a euphemism for ‘I’m scared to give my honest opinion’.
I’m not talking about being rude or racial and hurting comments but hasn’t this gone TOO far ?
There’s nothing wrong with a bit of fun and one of the ‘English’ charateristics
used to be that we could laugh at ourselves.
Let’s not become a ‘bland’ society , politicians are ONLY people who we have voted in and not , God forbid, arbiters of our thoughts - although that’s exactly what they would like to be.
Bloody hypocrites - not J Majors ‘back to family values’ when he was shagging the daylights out of that woman !

    Howard

    Absolutely spot on !
Policticians, people in public life and the media in general are all scared to death of saying “something they shouldn’t”
Scared of what and whom - often everyone is thinking the same thing but nobody dare say it.

I don’t hold with any form of racism at all but when you get a situation that means schools have to call a ‘blackboard’ a chalk board for fear of being racially offensive … well bloody ridiculous !

God forbid, arbiters of our thoughts - although that’s exactly what they would like to be

    Quis custodiet ipsos custodes
As we say around here ;)
We can all breathe a sigh of relief that John Major was washed away by Tony Blair on his anti-sleaze ticket ! Good job all that buying of honours and cronyism is a thing of the past !

Thanks for a great comment Howard, greatly appreciated

I think this look is hot! However, the visible suspenders is what makes it look raunchy. If they weren’t in school uniform and rather, a cute outfit including a short black skirt with black over-the-knee opaque tights and black boots - then it would be just plain hot!

thanks for taking the time to comment and welcome to the site.
I certainly agree that the overall look is hot it’s just the connotation with the school uniform and by default the age of the girls that I’ve never sat quite right with.

    Dear Rod,

Does it really matter if Girls Aloud dress in mini skirts and stockings? No it doesn’t.

Young children love them, teenagers love them and probably so do adults. Young children (especially) and teenagers look up to them and think they’re really pretty and want to be like them. I know this for a fact because they’re my idols and they’re my fav. band EVER!!

No-one really cares what they look like (as long as they don’t end up looking like Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson and Britney Spears- when she was bold- all rolled into one, which is very unlikley). :D
So it doesn’t really matter if they look like 16 year olds when they’re in their 20s.

The nation still loves them for who they are and their music, not so much as what they look like.

    Kind Regards

    DELLGIRL

P.S I hope this hasn’t in any way offended you.

They’re drop dead gorgeous all the time.

Jacqueline- The suspenders don’t matter because if you look at the piture below Nicola, Kimberley and Cheryl you can see some of the girls are wearing suspenders (bright red ones on Annabelle!!!)

I certainly see nothing wrong in mini shirts and stockings it’s just the schoolgirl suggestion I’ve always thought a bit ‘iffy’ The whole St Trinian’s idea really.

No-one really cares what they look like as long as they don’t end up looking like Amy Winehouse
    You’ve certainly got a point there :)

I think on the whole they seem like good role models really, certainly much better than the likes of winehouse or so called ‘ganster rappers’ etc
Thanks again for the inciteful comment and hope you’ll return
    All the best
