Ghyll Head ~ Trout Fishing in the Lake District

A post on my brother’s blog got me reminiscing, so much so I got the photo albums out and found a picture dating back to 1994 !
It doesn’t sound that long ago as a date but it was nearly 15 years ago and shows my brother and I fly fishing for trout at the idyllic Lakeland Tarn Ghyll Head

The picture was taken by The Official Mrs Goldeneye and you’ll note not only the outstanding beauty of the landscape but also the aura of relaxation that surrounds your host. This could be down to the perfection that is fly fishing for trout with flies you’ve tied yourself but I’m sure much of it is also down to being married and on holiday
Yes I know it will come as a shock as you’re used to me advocating the single life in Lincolnshire but when I became unmarried my car insurance went up and my life expectancy went down so there could be more to this marriage and holiday lark than it appears :)

Fly fishing for trout at a natural venue such as Ghyll Head is something that cannot be fully justified by explanation - it defies prose - certainly mine anyway !
It is something that has to be experienced. It’s not just fishing and is a million miles away from sitting on a plastic box drowning worms !

Tying your own flies and then casting them is an art in itself and possibly the most satisfying thing I can call to mind. Seeing a fish take a dry fly just as the sun is setting is pure exhilaration.
Time and circumstances brought about an end to my piscatorial pursuits, a great shame and something I really think needs addressing.

Being in such places, at one with nature, and pitting your wits against wily fish in a gentlemanly fashion erases everything but the moment from your mind. Life’s troubles, stresses and strains simply melt away - as if they never were.
You are connected with nature in the most intimate way, the very act of gracefully casting a fly requires you to become as one with rod and line, the need to fool the fish requires you and your fly to blend in so completely that you become, however fleetingly, part of the scenery and the very essence of the place itself.

I’ll stop now as I suspect I’m droning on and I weary your eyes too often as it is without self-indulgent reminiscing such as this

    Rod,
Nice suprise, as I’m no longer allowed to set foot on there without a permit it’s nice to get a glimpse from that angle. When I returned there this week everything was exactly as I had remembered it and I rediscovered a fantastic public right of way with stunning views of the Langdale Pikes.
    Great memories.

Looks idyllic. Fishing with your brother, I think there is a film and book about that?

A River Runs Through It !
Possibly my uncanny resemblance to Brad Pitt made you think of it :)

Methinks it was Mr. Goldeneye who took the photo of LB and the Missus. Age effecting the eyes, old boy?

I’m not sure the former Mrs Goldeneye would thank you for that :)
I did have very long hair then but wasn’t quite as svelt as I am now

Just as well, the long curly hair and chick jeans coould have lead to some unpleasant misunderstandings
    Best
