I have checked many photos online and they are definitely false widows. I live in Darlington so just north of Cleveland. Don't know how far north they are now but they're definitely this far north. I squashed 4 of them and there may be more as I stopped weeding as soon as I saw them and just squashed the ones that tried to escape. Most were not full grown but all the ones I saw were female which is worrying given how many eggs they lay. I have a toddler so felt I had to kill them however apologized to them as I killed them. I felt guilty as I'm an animal lover but can't risk my son being bitten as the bites sound nasty for adults so who knows how bad they'd be for a toddler. Very worrying they're up here. I move house in feb 11 and was concerned about the amount of house spiders. There were loads of the really thin, long legged ones, almost in every corner of the ceilings. I saw what I thought was a fake widow in the garage in November and caught it. I popped it in a tub and dropped it on the desk at the local council office and scared the **** out of the young girl at the desk. Pest control said they can't identify it and shouldn't worry as prob not poisonous. Anyway have seen more of them in the garage and one big one in the garden. After reading your page have had a look round the house and noticed there are now very few of the house spiders around. I'm feeling a little warey about them as live in Romsey Hampshire and there has been a few reports of hospitalisation due to these spiders recently. All I can say is they do what seams like a great job of killing all other spiders but will let the wife get into bed first every night ju! st in case!!
