Earthquake in Grimsby Lincolnshire ?

Tintin Ace Reporter Here !
Whilst enjoying a pleasant restorative drink your host was blissfully in his own world when at approximately 12.50 am on the 27th February 2008 the entire house began to shake !

Initially suspecting something related to Dolby Surround Sound it soon became clear as the roof began to shake that there might be slightly more to this !
Without fear for my own safety I immediately left the, previously supposed, safety of La Casa Goldeneye and took to the streets, resplendent in Bart Simpson pyjamas I hasten to add, to see what was afoot.

I found myself wondering has there been an earthquake or an explosion as I stood alone in Greyfriars light only by moody street lighting !
Before long others began to stir and something of the Blitz spirit developed by 1am amongst my neighbours.

Nerves and anxiety were evident amongst some but your host was of clear mind and purpose and set about in a resourceful manner to ascertain and achieve - absolutely nothing :)
I am of course not untried in the realms of reporting local natural disasters, bear witness my fearless report on the Grimsby Floods

I shall now seek further information and keep you updated with this gripping report
Please note time of original post - an internet scoop as we journos say ;)

Regards
Tintin Ace Reporter and first on the net with the story !

i felt the quake to and i live in grantham so basicaly i felt everything and like i wonder if it was a little stronger as the experts predict that at a 5+ quake would be quite dangerous for the uk houses and such as my origin is not from here and we build our houses there in a verry diferent way i do think that the british way of building should change in case that hapens a bigger earthquake

I suppose we could do some sort of maths with this….12.50 where you are, 1258 in South Yorks where I am (felt like we were going onto fast spin for a while with items rattling and creaking all around….and an unnerving feeling that the house was becoming rubbery). At first I thought a gust of wind was the cause…as it grew stronger I thought it was becoming gale force then the sofa started to become mobile.
I heard a young lady on an ad hoc local radio phone in describing how she flushed the loo just as it was about to begin. That must have been confusing.
I also heard that a friend in Liverpool felt it like I did at 12.58…but a friend they were conversing with in Southport on the phone at the time felt it just after.
Hopefully everyone is okay. I blame the government. :)

0.06 27.02.2008 Yes we just have had an earthquake Leighton Buzzard Bedfordshire which is South of Milton Keynes, you know the one with the steam railway.. I was just now sitting finishing off some photographic work just now on the computer and the whole house shook including vibrations moving the computer, The 2 cats sitting nearby to me noticed it and ran in to the bedroom! I was not mistaken then as I listen to comments about it 5.2 on the Rhickter scale (spelling!!)
This was different this time but but we have been hearing strange low booms sounds recently again mainly at night the make the double glazing vibrate. They also occur occasionally in the day time bu aret not so easy to hear with the ambient noise around .. Have you had any reports about that?
Regards and good night Andrew Robinson Bideford Green Linslade Leighton Buzzard

I hear on local TV that the epicentre was at Ludford, where I once owned a cottage, here’s some interesting facts about the village: Its 428ft above sea level one of the highest points on the Lincolnshire Wolds, its the source of the river Bain from a spring, there was an R.A.F. bomber base there throughout the second world war 101 squadron had the special task of carrying german speaking radio operators who confused the night fighters with false information but at great cost as it gave away their own position. From 1959 to 1963 at the height of the cold war 3 Thor IRBM missle launchers were based there each containing a 1 megaton nuclear warhead, I think we should all be grateful they’re not there now!

Lastnight was quite strange for me, I was watching Alien Vs Preditor 2, just as the govenment nukes the city the house started shaking. Of course like a complete dumbass I thought we were being bombed, but then after the shake a bright light came through my window, I immediatly thought ‘ALIENS’, Turns out my neighbouts garden light was on as they were outside wondering what just happend. After sitting in fear for five minutes I concluded it must have been a quake.

Kinda strange considering we’re in the middle of a tectonic plate and not near the boundries, I’m only seven-teen so this was my first experiance, so I was wondering if there’s ever been any other quakes to hit Grimsby/Lincolnshire?

Much love, your friendly neighbourhood retard-man, also known as Brannan

    :)

    Hi James
thanks for the comment and welcome to the site.
I myself have never heard of earthquakes in Lincolnshire although it seems there was a similar one 25 years ago !

Quite why it should happen all of a sudden I don’t know, surely there has to be something that actually sets a shift in the plates off ?
    Regards

I was wide awake and watching the TV, when at approx. 1.am the house began to shake, but what got me was the noise before the house began shaking.

Though at the time I soon realised that what was about to happen, was well beyond my control, so I remained seated and watched the house shake.

I had just come out of the bathroom when the rumbling started and for a split second I thought a plane was coming down, I also considered a bomb and an earthquake, when the whole house started shaking I just stood there in fear hoping this was not the end, I had never been so scared in my life. When it ended I ruled out the plane theory as there would have been an engine noise and a crash, a bomb could not be close enough to make the whole house shake but create no external damage, so I was only left with an earthquake which at the time sounded silly I rolling through my head, I always thought until today the British didn’t get earthquakes.

What was most annoying though was BBC News 24 said nothing about it for ages, I patiently waited for the woman to put her finger to her ear and say the words they log to hear ‘this just in’ but she just kept churning through the same events of the day. Eventually I turned to CNN and they were all over it? It does seem odd that we have to turn to the USA to get our own news first.

Further to an earlier comment asking was there any history of earthquakes in Lincolnshire, I think I’m right in saying that Lincoln Cathedral was famously badly damaged by an earthquake in its distant past.

Lincoln Cathedral was indeed damaged by an earthquake in 1185, the same year as an eclipse of the sun apparently, are we due one of those anyone? Here’s a thought Rod: perhaps Wybers Woods Monastry didn’t survive so well as the cathedral :)

Yes presure they are always expanding and building pressure against the next plate and with the amount of pressure one of the plates need to move sudnently, but its actualy very strange to have earthquake in the uk since as we are virtualy in the middle of a plate not at the end of it so its a bit strange :|

and lincolnshire had a earthquake nearly in the same day as we had now it was in the 25th of February, 1792, witch is nearly the same time do we have some kind of time clock on the earthquakes????

    Annie,
it must sound pretty tragic to those more used to such things but don’t forget:
The UK closes down with an inch of snow
Trains stop running in Autumn because leaves get on the tracks.

I am tempted to visit CA if only in the hope of bumping into Ashley Lawrence, but extreme climatic changes and crocodiles put me off :)

    Best
