Cycling in Lincolnshire ~ What a Joy !
Discover the joys of cycling around the country lanes of Lincolnshire
Well, regulars need not do as I shall bring these delights to a monitor near you !
All free from charge or exertion on your part - you lucky little devils !
Another glorious day saw your host donning the chick cycling trousers, filling the water bottle and peddling off with my camera on my back. Heading off via Waltham I veered off for a photo opportunity

Waltham windmill
It was in Waltham that Lincolnshire’s answer to Lance Armstrong ran into a potential problem.
I attracted the attention of the law ! And no it wasn’t for speeding !
A female rozzer fixed a glare upon me ! Being a life long fan of Sherlock Holmes my usually cumbersome mind is sharply honed to deductive reasoning ![]()
Taking note of the WPC’s eye line I soon divined that the object of the law’s attention was my awesome leg wear. Now, this presented a worry - could I be committing a crime?
I would allow for the possibility of a sartorial offence but I don’t believe such offences have yet found their way onto the statute book.
I instantly recalled the comment that was made here that being: they could be regarded as obscene ![]()
That left 2 possible offences:
That of obscenity
And carrying an inoffensive weapon
As luck would have it it was merely sexist lechery !
A continued rubber necking as I cycled by and subsequent semi-trip on the pavement gave the peelerette away. I know the police are not allowed to drink on duty but ogling cyclists - something should be done !

Parish Church of St Peter’s Ashby Cum Fenby
Ashby-Cum-Fenby was the next location and as seems the way of things the best aspects of the local church are marred making the ideal photo an impossibility

A beautiful quiet country lane
The legs and chest took a pounding with the hills of Ravendale but it was well worth it on 2 counts. Namely great exercise and it took me to the country lane above - that simply could be anywhere in the country and not another vehicle or person in sight.
This was on a fabulous stretch of cycling road between Ravendale and Hatcliffe.
So here I am taking in the sunshine, fresh air and countryside, I getting fitter, feeling healthier, enjoying myself and it’s all costing nothing !
Not continuing with these excursions is now unthinkable - my only disappointment is the time of year I got started

Is this really cycling distance from Grimsby ?
I returned home via an equally scenic circuitous route and arrived back at Wybers Wood feeling fresh and sans any aches and pains.
In preparation for the weekend an emergency trip to town was called for. A shout goes out to the lovely, and ever-smiling, Laura at Barclays Bank who organized the negotiating of a US $ cheque for me. Performics if you read this do bloody bank transfers please - not everybody lives in the USA - thanks for the money though
Sainsbury’s saw a typical Goldeneye shopping basket, this is what I bought - exactly nothing more and nothing less
12 bottles of claret
2 chicken breasts
3 chilled chicken Madras’
A pair of lycra stretch fit chick tracksuit trousers - size 10 long - of course
A glorious and satisfying day !
Regards to all
Rod

Rod,
Sounds great! As you were cycling around with great gusto I was stuck behind a tourist doing 20mph three quaters of the way around Lake Windermere on impassable roads-so much for driving an AMG-I’d rather have had your bike and got past the blighter.
One thing I don’t miss about living in the Lake District is the tourists.

Rod,
Were you wearing your cycling shorts in Sainsburys?
We’re sure all your friends and relatives are grateful that you have a new healthy hobby, at least it’ll keep you out of trouble and off the streets, only it won’t

p.s. is it time to take the stabilizers off yet….

I wold’t mind doing some cycling around the Lake District.
That was actually on my mind last night, the idea of going somewhere first in the car so as to go further afield
Drive carefully !

Were you wearing your cycling shorts in Sainsburys?
No I was not !
Secondly they are not shorts but trousers - my views on shorts being worn by men on this side of the equator are well known
All the best

Rod, there are two things you mentioned which could account for the special attention of the female rozzer! You said before you set out that you filled the water bottle, you didn’t say with water and I noted your visit to Sainsbury’s included the purchase of a dozen bottles of claret. Could it be you were weaving about as you cycled, drunk in charge of a bicycle?

Dino,

drunk - never !
I am abstemious in the extreme - well during day light hours
Such is the awesomeness of the Goldeneye Velocipede it can only be safely handled when fully compos mentis for that that the trousers are perhaps best avoided at times of lowered inhibitions as well

Good to find your photos of the Ravendale chalk pits as we always called them. On the right in the valley heading towards Hatcliffe.
We used to cycle up there from Grimsby West Marsh in the 60s, probably hardly ever saw a car then, we used to spend hours there exploring all the nooks and crannies!. On the way back we would pedal furiously to the start of the downwards section of Ashby Hill. The object then was to see who could freewheel the furthest, we normally got at least to the ice cream shop in Brigsley, you wouldn’t get much further as the road starts to climb then.
Almost 50 years later we still cycle past there and yes we do indulge in wearing lycra, if you have the legs and body show them!
As an aside, I hate the American term for lycra, spandex! now that does sound a bit dodgy
I remember an article in the Grimsby Telegraph years back about “lycra louts” as they called them having the audacity to cycle through the sleepy hollow of Hatcliffe at a speed greater than walking pace or something trivial.
BTW Still looking for you on Wybers with that guitar slung over your back, perhaps on a sledge in our ice gripped estate!

Steve,
it’s a great area for cycling isn’t it and although on the way there’s cars about when you get around there cars are still a rare sight in my experience.
I’m most likely seen with a camera heading off Wybers to walk on the back - even in this ice !
