Cleethorpes Sunday Market & Other Delights

Cleethorpes Sunday Market
Now that’s something to conjure with and being a former conjurer myself I felt equal to the task.
So here is a written and pictorial account of this morning spent in Cleethorpes
Allergy Warning: This Post May Contain Condescending Remarks :)

If the Sunday Times sent AA Gill to review the Sunday Market on the sea front at Meggies (as it’s known locally) he’d no doubt rail against driving north of the Watford Gap and by the time he got to Leicester Forest East he’d already be preparing a stream of acidic cliched references to assail all those he saw who don’t live South of Leicester - and sadly . . . he’d be right !

The market’s main core audience appears to be day trippers from Yorkshire.
Please expand I hear you cry - well a picture paints a thousand words !

Yorkshire Day Trippers

Father, Mother annd Offspring (the future of Britain)

This really is the norm and not the exception !
The Sunday Market is no longer quite what it was a few years ago. It used to be packed with stalls but now appears half empty. It seems the ministrations of local Trading Standards Officers may perhaps have taken their toll.
No longer is there somebody outside shouting Cigarettes £2 a packet
You can’t get an Omega Watch for £20 or and Manchester Rovers football shirt for a fiver.
The people seemingly doing the most business are the burger stalls selling their wares to those seeming least in need of them.
Upon leaving the building the nostrils are filled with the aroma sizzling fat - though I’m not sure whether that was a relic from the burger stall or was emanating from the sunbathers on the beach

Cleethorpes Mod Scene Northern Soul Scooter Meet

Small Portion of the Seaside Scooter Meet

Moving swiftly away from the delights of Wonderland (as it’s euphemistically called) and things rapidly get better. Take a look at all the ‘Mods’ who meet on the sea front on a Sunday with a great display of customized scooters. They’re a great bunch of people, very friendly and their presence is a positive boost to the area.

Small Gauge Steam Train

Light Steam Railway

It’s easy to pull the whole resort down but today it was a lovely place to be. The tide was in, the beach is kept immaculately clean and the place was already packed at 9.30 am. The beach was full of sun worshippers and families and you could do a lot worse with your Sunday than visit the resort.
If you want a tip then when you turn down to the promenade and you see the pier in front of you turn right.
Turning left transports you back in time.

I come at least once a week just to walk for a few hours and I always enjoy it, despite looking like a recently liberated inmate from a Japanese prisoner of war camp amongst the crowds of day trippers :)
I was going to be a lot more acerbic in a manner I find amusing but in hindsight a lot of people don’t see the intended humour and it would be a shame to run Cleethorpes down with misunderstood sarcasm.

I’ve had another glorious day - why not give Cleethorpes a go one Sunday morning ?
You may even see me - but don’t let that put you off !

Sun Worshipfully Yours
Rod

The Phatter Family could easily have been visiting the U.K. from their home in one of America’s trailer parks.

I’m not sure “enjoy” is the word I would use, but I certainly find amusement in seeing people who are fluffier than I am. Helps my self-esteem.

Do the Sunday day trippers still flock to the market on a hot summers morning and buy boxes of broken chocolate biscuits and duvets? It used to be so funny watching these folks (who had arrived on a coach), having to walk around all day lumbered with bulky and perishable items.

    Hi Norm,
thanks for the comment and welcome to the site.
It’s not what it used to be I’m afraid - I too remember in years gone by when people flocked to the Sunday Market in droves.
Sadly, it’s half full stall wise and that’s reflected in the number of punters.

There’s still some amusement to be had though, I watched a stallholder shouting and bawling at a police officer after somebody had grabbed some of his stock and run off.
He was screaming about law and order . . . his stock was . . . reefer papers, bongs and other such drug related stuff

    Cheers

    Hi

We are a Harley Davidson biking club coming to Cleethorpes on Sunday 10th April. I have found your site while looking for a good picture of Cleethorpes to promote the ride to our members. I hope you don’t mind (if you do please let me know) but I have borrowed it to use on the page promoting the ride and also given a plug for your site which looks really good. You might even like to meet up to get some pictures of the Chapter on their Harleys.

    Best regards

    John

    Hi John,
sounds fantastic, thanks for letting me know and welcome to the site.
Happy for you to use the photo, many thanks for the link.
    Some more pics here

I think I’ve got a double clash of dates John, that said I’d like to come down and most certainly will if possible - if it’s a sunny day it’ll not be something to miss
    Regards
    Rod
