Book Dealer the trade magazine for the secondhand book trade is to close its doors after 35 years.
Since the unstoppable march of the internet the magazine has got thinner and thinner and decline looked, sadly, inevitable.
The backbone of the publication was always its wants match system. Booksellers advertising for and responding to book searches and wants.
The internet and sites such as abebooks and ebay have rendered this system redundant for most.
It’s a great pity when yet another pillar of the secondhand and antiquarian book business collapses (how many are left holding the roof up ?) but such seems the way of things today.
On a slightly brighter note there are, apparantly, rumours of a possible saviour.
Time will tell

I could not help but smile at this from the ABA.
It is in response to what they consider the threat of reproduction or facsimilie dust jackets.
Being standard bearers for the trade and upholding all that is good and proper they came out with new regulations for their members:
• “ABA members must mark all facsimile dustwrappers indelibly and that marking must be clearly visible in normal light.”
• “Facsimile dust-wrappers may not be exhibited at ABA book fairs.”
Presumably then, having reprint jackets restored to look like first edition jackets is still OK.
Adding signed pages from reprints into rebound first editions is also OK, just don’t sell it with a facsimilie dustwrappper.
Not that any ABA dealers would ever do any of the above, of course
Good to know the ABA are keeping an eye on standards, we can all sleep easier in out beds tonight
ABEbooks got some much needed publicity in the May 2006 issue of the men’s style magazine GQ.
