The Brigg raft is now on display at the Brigg Heritage Centre !

There is also a nice model that shows how it would have looked, and examples of the type of Bronze Age implements that would have been used to make it.

Well worth a visit. Free entry, and 2 hours free parking in Brigg.

Hamish,
this is wonderful stuff, many thanks.
EH mentioned that most of the baot was supposedly left and that there were plans to re-excavate.
Show show out of date some of their entries are if it was re-dug in 1974 !

Let's hope it comes back to Brigg Hamish
Regards,
Rod

This was the last of 3 major Late Bronze Age discoveries in the brick pits, all during the 1880s.

In 1884, an oak plank causeway that would have crossed the boggy ground near the Ancholme. Another section was exposed and photographed in 1933.

In 1886, a complete 48ft logboat was found and raised. After being displayed there for some years, it was (you're not going to like this..) moved to Hull Albion Street museum, where it was destroyed in the blitz in 1943. However, Scunthorpe Museum still have on display the smaller Appleby logboat, well worth a look.

This is a timely post for 2 reasons:

1. Exeter University have just announced a project to build a sewn-plank boat similar to this

2. The Brigg 'raft' was not destroyed entirely - the rest was re-excavated in 1974 and taken to the National Maritime Museum. There have been some discussions recently about bringing it back to Brigg for permanent display.

Veronica -- apparently the first Icelandic Viking settlers were predominantly male, and they raided the British Isles, including the Celtic areas to find and take wives back home to Iceland.

....Then 900 years later the buggers stole our fishing grounds.

You are right yes. We don't set out into the unknown nowadays. What character traits these early people must have had. I read that many Irish people actually have the same single factor genetic as Icelandic people. Imagine that journey from Iceland into unknown waters .

My youngest son did an archaeology degree and I was fascinated by his marine archaeology module. I am always impressed by the determination and workmanship of those early people who had neither the tools nor the training available today , but still managed to create something 'floatable' .

Veronica,
the human side of early vessels is something I find incredible, imagine seeting out in hollowed out trees and not even knowing what may lay in front of you !

Naval archaeology is fascinating . I have been interested ever since going to the Vasa musuem in Stockhom which houses a 17th Century war ship , The Vasa, pulled up almost intact out of the lagoon. ( google for that )

Imagine my excitement then, when I heard that Cheshire had a salt boat on display at Nantwich museum. As interesting as it was after a 55 minute drive, it turned out to be merely a very large utensil used in the old Cheshire salt making industry. ('wich' meaning salt house ) . Ah well .
