Big Cats in Lincolnshire ~ Big Cat Sightings

Big Cat Sightings in Lincolnshire
It’s a topic once touched on before but one I find particularly interesting so I think it’s worth covering properly.
Are there Panthers, lynx, leopards, pumas and the like here in Lincolnshire ?

I’d like to split this issue properly in as much as there are hoaxes and genuine mistakes out there, of course there are, but this is not ‘tin foil hat’ stuff.
There is genuine evidence of big cats in the UK. Obviously non-native to Britain they are believed to have been released into the wild by their owners - particularly some years ago when the British government act made it illegal to own such creatures without proper licence.

Here’s a quote from the United Kingdom government agency dealing with this . . .

In Lincolnshire, a farmer found several of his sheep killed and eaten. On some of the carcases only the skull and spine were left. The farmer said the attack was down to a big cat and officials visited the site. Photos of the carcases were taken

There have also been reports of a Puma type cat around the River Ancholme area, a Lynx at Market Rasen, others at Fiskerton near Lincoln, Tattershall Castle, Laughton Forest, Grimsby and Scunthorpe ( around the M180 ) to name but a few. Some get spotted by numerous people - so much so they get a nom de guerre ‘Manthorpe Puma’ and who could forget the Grimsby Growler . . . remember this quote

This latest sighting of the so-called Grimsby Growler is the third in the Great Coates and Wybers Wood area and brings the total number of incidents reported to the police to four.

If there are those out there that think this is all the works of cranks and UFO spotters then think again
puma, panther, leopard, lynxThe existence of big cats in this country has evidential support and is accepted as factual by the government bodies dealing with it.

Having looked at some of the pictures DEFRA ( Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs ) have they are, as well as being very gory so not included here, quite staggering - there’s clearly something going on here

What would be interesting is to find out whether any have actually bred here in the countryside of Britain or are they all simply escapees or big cats released by their owners who held them illegally.

I am very keen to hear of more sightings, information, experiences or opinions.
Do you believe there are big cats out there ?
Have you seen a big cat in Lincolnshire ?

Please do leave a comment if you have any opinions, thoughts or know of any sightings
Many thanks in advance

I can’t say I have had any sightings myself Rod, however the bit about them being released by their owners makes sense. There was a ‘craze’ in the late 80s and into the 90s of mad idiots keeping big cats in their homes as pets! It really was a crazy thing to do; as well as being dangerous it was, in my humble opinion, incredibly cruel. I do indeed believe that this is what has led to these sightings as the poor things had to go somewhere. Unfortunately, out of their natural habitat, they would have, at first, had some difficulty coping. However I do believe that these creatures are indeed here to stay now.

As much as I have pity for them, however, I still don’t want to meet one on one of my country walks.

there are some strange goings on - when I went to Rushmoor Country Park on of the keepers there told me they got their kangaroo from the wild in Lincolnshire !
The RSPCA called them and asked them if they’d take it - it was reported in woodlands !
The question is who bought it originally and why - also where did they get it - you can’t buy kangaroos at Tesco !

Personally, I’ll be having my eyes peeled for one when I’m out - camera at the ready !

There is supposed to be one on lord yarboroughs estate, suposidly one of my friends nearly hit one in his car between Brocklesby and Kirmington about 10 years ago his car ended up on its roof in the field, I wouldnt want to crash a car there knowing that ive just missed a big cat on the loose, incedentaly at the rear of Newsham woods is a grass field there was some unexplained deaths in there about the same time lots of dead sheep clustered in one corner of the field as if they had all been pushed there and there remains where ripped to shreds..

    Chris,
that’s interesting, all that woodland round there would surely hide a creature with ease I should have thought.
I wonder whether they move about a lot as I don’t imagine there ar a lot out there but it’s clear they do exist.
I wonder whether the black cat near Grimsby and the M180 is the same one a Brocklesby and various other relatively close locations.

My father in law saw one about 8years ago on the road that runs from Wold Newton to the A631. As he passed the North Ormsby turning he saw what he thought was a German Shepherd jump the hedge into the road, stopped it jumped the next hedge and then he realised it was a big cat so got in the car quick and drove home………Or so he said??

    Rod,

It’s time we knew for certain. All this talk about big cats and no one’s been stalked or bitten yet. Think of it this way, if we tie you up for bait you’d be doing your county a huge favour…. and we know how much you love your county :) We’ll baste you in goose fat (to keep out the cold) perhaps a little gravy and a few wild mushrooms, dress you in elaborate garlands of Bay for both modesty and flavour….(lord knows we don’t want him complaining to the management about small portions :) )

I have had 3 sightings over the last few years, all in different locations.

The first one was at Tattershall Thorpe. There were 4 of us in the car at the time and we all saw it halfway across a field which had a crop in that was no more than a foot tall. Very feline in gait it was almost 3 or 4 times the height of the crop. Pure black too!

2nd sighting was just near Humberside Airport on my way home. A large black cat like figure ran across the road in front of me and jumped over the hedge and into a field.

3rd sighting was only about 6 weeks ago, again on my way home from work i saw a large ‘cat’ crossing the field at the back of the Mercedes Benz dealership at Laceby. Again very similar to the first one, it towered over the crop!

    HH,
    now you’re cooking !
I’m especially interested in the one near the Laceby bypass.
Can you conceive of any possible explanation in your mind for what you saw or does it simply have to be a non-native big cat ?

I’m convinced they’re about personally - although in this case I wonder perhaps . . . is it the same one ?
    I feel I can’t go anywhere without a camera now :)
Thanks for this HH - very interesting indeed

Unfortunately i noticed it just as i had turned onto Laceby Bypass and was accelerating towards Grimsby. When i saw it, i could see it walking, again very feline in shape and gait and large compared to the crop in the field. I would love to go searching around the edges and hedges for footprints, but probably wouldnt be there due to either a) ploughing or b) the weather. Perhaps we could form a local Big Cat Research Group for any local sightings!!!! Just imagine being the first in Britain to PROVE they are out there!!!

    HH,
I had in mind when I wrote the post that perhaps we could gather as much information on sightings around Lincolnshire as possible and see if there proved to be a common thread which could perhaps lead to something.

I drove passed the spot you mentioned twice yesterday - kept my eyes peeled just in case

Maybe should get in touch with the Grimsby Telegraph to ask them to put an article in about big cat sightings locally and see how many others come forward with their sightings too! Obviously the more cases, the more chances to collate!

I’ve never seen a big cat in Lincolnshire, in fact I don’t know if I’ve ever been to Lincolnshire but I’m sure its nice, but I have seen a big cat in Devon. Back in the early 80s both myself and the old hag I was married to at the time before she turned into a witch, saw a large black cat, probably the size of a Puma cross the road, go up the bank and into the hedgerow. Cross my heart and hope to die, that’s the honest truth. Had I known at that time that my wife as she was, would later transform into some form of medieval spotty face puss filled old hag, I would have stopped my car and fed her to the beast

The Growler from 2004 was a black greyhound which was living wild for approx 2 years, it was finally enticed over many months off building up its confidence. It now lives on a comfy sofa in Wybers Wood. I got this story first hand from its owner who took patience & time to rescue this beautiful creature.

While visiting the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe dunes yesterday AApril 18th) at around 12.15pm, I saw what I’m 100% certain was a big cat and was most probably a panther.

It was about 60-70 yards away from me inside the fenced off area of the nature reserve, just a couple of hundred yards away from the car park.

I saw it sideways on in full view for about 4 seconds. It then reached up to a bush with its front paws, before crouching down and disappearing out of view.

What’s particularly gutting is that I was walking along the trail with my girlfriend and we’d gone there specifically so she could take photos. Unfortunately she was wandering behind me and was facing the other direction, so by the time I’d called her over the panther had gone.

I don’t come from the Lincolnshire area and was only up there to visit my girlfriend’s family, so didn’t know anything about whether big cats had previously been seen in the area. As soon as I got home to London I searched the Internet and found that there’d been numerous similar sightings around Lincolnshire and particularly around Mablethorpe.

I realise that this is just another story with no photographic evidence, but I’m absolutely certain of what I saw.

You say it’s just another story but I would argue that’s what gives it so much credibility.
I know people are sceptical of this but why would someone such as yourself tell us about this - you have nothing to gain.

I personally think there have been simply too many sightings for this to be dismissed

We heard a commotion last night and a cat scream, this cat had been calling for her missing kittens just a few minutes earlier. Today she too is gone. We live at Stargazers Park Frampton, Nr Boston, Lincs. If anyone sees a big cat round here we would like to know, thank you.

I have no doubts that this was a big cat .

Rod, I have been very sceptical over the last few years after hearing all the tales of the mystical “beast” roaming the wolds even after a local PCSO saw what was described as a big black cat on the blue stone heath near to cadwell park, but over the last two weeks while house sitting my partner and i have between us had 3 sightings, and if my sisters dog had had its way we would of had the physical proof as well as she went tearing accorss the field on the second occasion.
what i have seen i couldnt say was a puma or panther or whatever but i will say it was bigger than a chocolate labrador had a long tale that was carried upwards and was almost jet black in colour the first time it was at the far side of the field next to the house so I was a bit unsure but the last two where no more than 30 metres from the window i was looking out! to say i sh*t a brick was a bit of an understatement especially when i saw daisy running across the field after it and reasilsed that i had left the back door wide open.
now I am spending my evenings sat with a spot lamp and a camera waiting for number 4 sighting and hopefully the proof that everyone seems to want.
If i get anything before i leave i will send it over to you.

    Regards

    Hi Rod,
My partner has just returned home from a visit to his gran who lives in osgodby, near Rasen. We have lived in the area all of our lives and have never seen the big cat… However his gran has a field backing onto her house and has told us that she has seen something resembling a puma or panther. The family have made a joke of it and said she was seeing things.. Including my partner….. Until tonight! He walked in the door and told me that as he and his dad drove down the road that takes you to osgodby village (the turning off the A46) he saw a very large cat that was jet black with a tail longer than a dog, it ran straight across the road directly infront of his truck. He couldn’t beLieve what he saw and knows it was no dog or domestic cat. It was staying low to the ground as it ran across the road but was alot bigger than anything he had seen before. I am intrigued so hope this helps!

I have recentley been working at a wildlife park near cambridge, at the same time there has been a couple of sightings near by of a black puma type cat.
The owner of the park has told me that the normal colour of a puma is brown and black is not that common, how comes most sights in the uk are black is this true?
I have really got into the sighting of big cats in the uk, and spend many hours on the internet looking at reports, sightings and think they must be out there in small numbers with the number of sightings reportted.

As to colouring one thought comes to mind, as everybody associates these type of cats as being black perhaps they’re the sort that people bought originally - hence when finding their way into the wild . . .

I’m hard headed about everything Lewis but I think they are out there as well - too many sightings in the same places by absolutely sensible staright-laced people for it to be without any basis

I was in the car with HH when we spotted the big cat at Tattershall Thorpe, it was definitely a big cat! and it was an awesome sight. I have a theory as to why these beasties are seen regularly near roads and yet people argue that if they exist they would take farmed livestock for food so be more widely reported. Why would they need to take livestock? our county is rich in rabbits, squirrels, game birds, wildfowl etc……and every day we see them flattened on roads….Sorry Rod even hedgehogs! Our cars are excellent meal providers for any scavenging wild cats out there……Is my theory anyway. Why else would they hang around roads, with seemingly no fear of traffic!

  51. Rod said,

    October 1, 2010 @ 9:14 am

    Mrs HH,
that’s an excellent theory and one I’d not thought about - I’m also very jealous of your sighting.
I like the idea of the road kill theory, makes sense. I’d thought it may simply be that moroists see them because there’s obvioulsy a lot of people on the roads and nobody in fields or woods - I’d also considered the hedgerow / roadside aspects of Kestrels etc - nowadays you see more wildlife by the roadside than you do ‘in land’ as it were.

    Very interesting indeed

Thoughts were that it was a dog type animail. This is in the area were this animal has been seeen alot lately.

Seriously though, all sounds very interesting and I like the idea of trying to find some evidence of big cat existence and when a suitable area can be determined then a trip out would be great.

Re the otters Rik, very exciting any information at all would be really appreciated on the thread below

Certainly just saw what looked like a panther (it was no domestic cat, HUGE) while walking my dog down the lines. I parked up on station road, walked down the railway lines towards Holton le Clay huge black creature! Scared the lights out of me, i’m positive it was a panther.

Hi there guys. I am usually on the search for otters so do many riverside walks but due to the adverse weather a friend and i and my trusty spaniel decided to park at the church in Bradley vilaage and walk across the fields to the woods. We worked through the abandoned barns and out to the fields. We looked to the right and at the edge of the field we saw it. What could only be described as the picture that is at the top of this page. It was racing across at about 30 mph. I know my animals and this was no dog, fox etc it was definately a big cat. The only reason i have to doubt it would only be because it is not a native animal rather than my eyesight being at question.

    Hi
Just read daz n jac’s entries and though they might be interested in this.

I live nr Gainsborough and visit Laughton forest frequently, last summer my wife and I saw a large black Cat in a ride on the edge of the forest between Blyton and scotter.

The cat we feel, was roughly the size of a Labrador dog, in fact my wife thought it was one, until it turned side ways on and lifted its tail feline like and presented a perfect Cat profile1

As it walked out of view finally, its tail trailed low very Cat like.

We returned later to the exact spot where the Cat stood and relised the tussock grass stands 12in high.
The Cats body as we remember was clearly visible above the grass.

This fits roughly, size wise Labrador as my wife first thought it was.

We are used to watching Badgers,Otter and Foxes so we have a good idea of size in animals

Hi Broc, you mention the fact that you spot otters/badgers. Where do you go for this and have you spotted any? I live in Lincolnshire and am always up for different walks espeially if there are chances of seeing things.
If need to mention in secret so as not to publish locations then my email is ganet06@yahoo.co.uk but i am sure you can trust everyone on this site. Cheers for your help

I heard an american big cat researcher on the Radio recently who, after many years of the game, still counts himself lucky to spot one a year. He was incredulous that most of the British Isles seem to have seen at least one. Having said that, my daughter is adamant that she saw a large black cat on the hillside at Caistor, as we drove up the main drag to the Immingham turnoff about 10 years ago. Oh and we have a black greyhound, a beautiful big lad, but the photo you show in no way resembles him.

This comment is not exactly about wild cats but is relevant nonetheless in terms of how our eyes can deceive us into seeing what isn’t there. Whilst out walking the dog recently I happened to glimpse something amongst the trees that at first sight gave me quite a shock (no, it’s not THAT sort of place!). Having the dog gave me some extra courage, so I endeavoured to take a fuzzy picture using my phone and torch combined. I have emailed it to the site. Looking at it now I can see quite clearly what it is, but at the time……

Me and my boyfriend are camping just off the Brancy Wharf Canal and last night we had a ‘to-do’ so i went off in a huff with our dog for a walk. I walked by the canal past a field of crops until i came to a spot of trees with a little unnocupied house, which i am guessing is used for tools or machinery now (dont quote me on that) set back in it.My mind was else where until my dog stopped in his tracks and wouldnt move,he started growling and backing off, which frightened the hell out of me.I scanned the area and saw what i can only describe as a big black dog with a long tail. I was unnaware of these stories about a black panther around these areas but im a firm believer now!!! About 2 years ago i saw a miniture version of this walk across my front grass, this one was strolling out in my back garden, frightened my to death and i must admit that if i hadnt fetched my partner to see it, no-one would have believed me. I am not a resident of Lincolnshire, just pass through as a haulage driver. What I saw today led me to search the web & got me to this page.

23 June, 19:15 hrs, I was northbound on the A1, later checks show it was the Foston bypass section, about 1 mile prior to the turning for Dry Donnington. I looked right into a large field & saw what I can only describe as “a lynx type” animal. Much larger than a fox & darker in colour, I would say is was a reddish brown with darker markings.

I travel 1000-2000 miles per week & have done for 37 years, so I must have seen thousands of fox’s, badgers, deer even an otter once! so I know what I saw & it wasn’t any British mammal (in the accepted way).

I was previously a bit sceptical on this subject, not any more!

    Hi Rod,

On Saturday (09/07/11) at about 1pm I was travelling up the A15 towards the Humber Bridge when I spotted a large black cat-like animal. My partner was driving and I was looking out at the fields towards Worlaby/Bonby. The animal was facing away from me and pouncing up and down like a juvenile domestic cat would play with an insect. While I was watching, it pounced on the same spot 4 or 5 times. I could see that the animal was much larger than a domestic cat and probably the same size as a Spaniel dog. I could see the back of its head, its back end and its tail. Its tail snaked up into the air like a cat’s although it had a more rounded end than a domestic cat. I could not see its legs as it was standing just behind a mound of earth.

I hope this is helpful to you.

At about midnight on Sunday 10th July 2011, whilst driving home down Phoenix Parkway, Scunthorpe. A cat emerged from the woods, trotted across the road in front of me, and disappeared into the woods on the other side. It was much larger then a domestic cat. It had a thick, round ended tail, longish slender legs, very strong, sleek movements and its coat was greyish in colour, with markings. A bit freaky so close to my house, I made sure my own cat was safely home before locking up. lol

Also, one late evening a few years ago whilst out driving with a friend. We saw what we first thought was a labrador walking along the grass verge. As we got closer it turned and walked over the verge and into a field. It was then very obviously a huge black puma/panther looking cat with a long sleek tail. My friend doesnt believe in these things roaming our countryside, but that fair startled him. This large critter was on the B1205, just before Brandy Wharf on the sharp bridge bend.

Hi Rod, was out on a walk at South Ferriby and whilst walking along the canal we looked to the left and saw a black cat or a dog. It jumped over what looked to be a 3 or 4 ft hedge and strolled along the length of the field whilst ten of us watched it for a few minutes before it disappeared into a copse. It was literally in the middle of the countryside with no houses and would seem odd if it was a dog. All i can confirm (due to the distance) is that it was jet black and appeared to be slightly bigger than a labrador. If it was a cat i would be surprised (obviously) but also, if it was a dog i would be equally as surprised as it was in the middle of nowhere and i expect there are not many large jet black dogs running around the countryside either. Is there many other sightings around this area??

    Hi Rod,

I was lead to this site through means of a series of events..I was watching a documentry on wild animal attacks this evening where one of the cases shown was an attack on a young teenage boy in a field next to his home in a small rural village in south wales (UK). This then transported me back to a terrifying experience I had myself when I was living near the docklands, in east London some 14 years back. I was approaching the descent to pass under the motorway on my way back from work( canary wharf) It must have 15 to 20 metres away (max) it was black and I immediately stopped me in my tracks shocked and terrified at what I was seeing It hadn’t seen me as it was walking in the same direction but a good 15 metres ahead.

Without a doubt it was a huge black cat I could tell by the waythe anatomy moved especially its shoulder blades and its long tail. I would say that it looked like a panther/jaguar. The reason I believe my eyes hadn’t deceived is because I was close enough to !
see what it was, just as well the traffic was so loud and it couldn’t hear me walking, I was frozen and finally made a hasty getaway as soon as I could move. Ita was too large to be a large dog and it looked like a cat.

The only people who can believe that these large predatory cats are roaming free across the country are the people whom have sighted one. it was all too close for comfort, noone believed me when I told them so my encounter has been largely untold until now.

    Tina,
a warm welcome to the site, it’s an amazing story and thanks for sharing it.
There are simply too many stories like this for the doubters to deny the existence of big cats out there in the wild.
    Kind regards,

When hubby and I lived at North Scarle (see previous comments) I saw a big black cat on several occasions. It was seen several times around Lowfields Fishing Retreat and can confirm it was seen by at least 20 people, many of whom did not believe big cats excisted until they saw it, over a 7 year period. Also we found prints in the snow and faeces belonging to a big cat. On one walk we saw a mother and cub. There was a report in the Lincolnshire Echo and statements taken from several residents that had seen the cat.

    Hi

Here’s a report of of a truly bizarre sighting from the GY message board -

“I can remember working late at the bus depot in victoria street when a clown cornered one of the lions in our bus garage.”

He is of course referring to the escape from a circus of four lions in Grimsby’s top town in 1991(?).
The lions were on the loose for several hours and I belive that one man was actually mauled.

    cheers

There’s a strange animal on the sea wall in Grimsby, at the back of Tioxide. I’ve seen it twice now, just before Christmas when I accidentally disturbed it biking through the cutting from the road to the wall( in-between the sewage works and Tioxide) and last night, both times it was dark, but last night the creature was in some light from the back of Novartis.Am not joking or messing about. I just hope am safe to continue push biking to work this way. I’ve seen lots of animals in my 4 years of cycling to work, foxes, deers, rabbits, bit this thing was different, I shouted the first time at it, but it just continued to run along side me at the bottom of the bank, and I wasn’t hanging about. I hope this is nothing to worry about, but I would like to know what it is.

    Rod,

I spend a lot of time around the tioxide and novartis area both fishing and taking photographs and I can’t say I have ever seen anything apart from the odd fox roaming around.

I walk Stealth Pooch along the North Wall many times a week but not very often at night. I personally haven’t seen or heard anything, but occasionally SP will stop and stare down into the reeds at the bottom of the bank, but has never run down the bank. I shall keep my peepers open.

Whilst driving to work, around a year ago, on the back road in between Cherry Willingham and Fiskerton I saw a large Amber coloured cat with a black pattern casually walking across the road, bearing in mind I was doing around 50mph. It went into a feild. I remember how prominent it’s shoulder bones were as it walked so calmly. This would have been at about 10.30am.

A friend and me saw a Lynx very clearly standing by the side of the road at night between Gainsbrough and Laughton in September 2007. Absolutely no doubt as to what it was, saw the ear tufts very clearly, it was about the size of a German Shephard.

    Ponder this!
I believe in the very early sixties The Dangerous Animals Act or some thing like was passed.
This prolibited the domestic keeping of these animals.
A relation of mine kept a male lion from a cub in his house near Barnsley.
It roamed his house via double hinged swing internal doors (no alarm then)
The local postie regularary complained about it.
The local publican used to feed it half a beer!
IT SOMETIMES GOT OUTA THE GROUNDS!
It scared the S–T outa me my parents,grand-parents and others except my relalion.
He WAS VERY RESPONSIBLE eventually the lion went to the Tower Circus–Blackpool.
Others were not so responsible and a lot were let loose in the night especially on Saddleworth moor/Ilkley moor/
Bodmin moor ETC. according to the press of that time.
    Strange Days indded!

    Regards The Saxman.

    Saxman,
I feel confident there’s much in what you say, I don’t say every sighting is genuinely a big cat,
Remember My Big Cat Sighting for example - people thought that was all sorts of things.

That said I’m sure some are real and I can still imagine a modern scenario where somebody illegally buys a lynx cub or something and as it goes begins to regret it . . .

something that I have thought about for a while re big cats in the area- has anybody considered the savannah? These are not your average moggie and I know there are a number of them in Lincolnshire. Ok they aren’t black cats and not as big as the ‘real’ thing but sizewise they are pretty impressive take a look at Magic the savannah on youtube and it will give you an idea of the size of some of them.

Did you here that following the discovery of a recently mutilated Deer in Stroud, still warm. DNA samples have been taken for analysis by Warwick University, this will hopefully finally prove the existance of large cats surviving in Britain. Results are expected sometime around the end of the Month (Jan-Feb 2012).

    Option,
that will be very interesting as I understand many in authority still dispute their existence, I feel as sure as I can be that there are big cats out there, not many perhaps but some.

I remember a big cat sighting at Staxton North Yorks just before Christmas in 2003 and went to look at the footprints it left in the snow and they did look to be feline and big - I know there were some hairs recovered and sent away for analysis but I never did get to find out what they were from. There were a lot of sightings in that area for a couple of years Burniston, Osgodby, Folkton, Seamer, Eastfield and at least one report of a mangled sheep - and then nothing (I used to have a friend who lived in Folkton and she used to keep all the news clippings for me) I dont doubt that there are big cats out there but I do think that some of them arent as big as people think they are - hence the savannah comment.

I saw a large black cat a couple of weeks ago near North Kelsey on farmland leading upto Howsham. I was able to watch it for long enough to realise it wasn’t a dog. Has anyone else seen it near here?

its a long time since i have looked on the site, i was hoping out of sight out of mind as i am a very skittish person. It was only because a friend told me that someone had replied to my post about the cat in my garden that i am back here. I have never seen the cat again, although a few mornings ago i looked outside and something had definately had a rather large bird on my decking, no carcous remained, just lots of feathers. For anyone wanting to know or if they have ever seen this cat, l live at benington near boston and perhaps someone should have come and took a dna sample when it peed up my shed door, we might then have found out what it was. I have been told about the Savaana cats and have wondered if it was one of those but i am more likely to think it was a lynx
