Rod,

I think it's the idea of the ... '' mansion fire bell '' .... that caught my imagination . It creates a superb image of the villagers getting up and dashing through the blizzard to save the house.

V,
that's superb, many thanks indeed, there's a wealth of things associated with the house and site - wish it had survived - what tales it could tell

A fascinating half hour here Rod.

The regional and national newspapers from 1835 have so many references to Bayons Manor than I could possibly record. There are the usual society and social inclusions, a house party, engagaments births marriages and deaths. But I have narrowed down to four, events which may be of interest.

STAMFORD MERCURY Nov 2nd 1838

Mr D'Eyncourt has built a gothic half palace, half castle with numerous elegant apartments, gothic portals cloth wallpaper and oak doors It will take 80 workmen another three years to complete it.

HULL DAILY MAIL 8/9/1927

The owners of the house have a great deal to do with the making of British history. One of them fought at Bosworth with Ricahrd 111 in 1485 and died in an undervault, ''his skeleton found sitting at a table with a book, pen and paper.''

One was cited by Henry 8th as being too frendly with Anne Boleyn and was executed rather suffer a pardon offered on condition of a false confession.

1930 HULL DAILY MAIL

The twin D'Eyncourt brothers are to be film stars . They are making a film for Elstree produced by Eleanor Glyn. Mr Walter one of the twins would not comment as to whether Bayons Manor would be used in the filming.

NOTTINGHAM EVENING POST March 15th 1930

FIRE AT MANSION . FILM STAR as FIREMAN

A fire broke out in the nursery wing of Bayons Manor . It started as a smouldering beam in the central chimney and left a large hole in the ceiling. Suits of armour on the walls became red hot.

The village people were summoned by the mansion fire bell and rushed to the scene in a snowstorm. Film star My Walter Tennyson D'Eyncourt was in his pyjamas when he helped to put out the blaze.

Linda,

What an amazing post. It is always heart-warming to hear of tales where the ordinary folk in our society have their work acknowledged for eternity and you must be very proud. Fantastic to have the Lusitania link also

Rod,

A perfect post . Ty. The picture of 'Lincolnshire heritage' is superb, and the now and then shots of course are what I find so fascinating. Sad to see something as historic like this destroyed. You are right .

I was interested to read the history of Bayons Manor
The photograhs are fascinating
I am the great granddaughter of George Todd who`s families worked on the estate as carpenters
When he died a plaque was presented by Ruth Tennyson D`Eyncourt
It reads
In memory of George Todd born 1839- died 1925at teaby
He faithfully served three generation on the Bayons Manor Estate
This tablet is placed here by Ruth Tennyson D`Eyncourt
It is inside Tealby church.

Also his son David Todd has his name on the war memorial in tealby church, he was on the Lusitania when it was sunk by a germansubmarine torpedo in 1915
We have happy memories of our visits to Tealby , a beautifull village , hope to return some day

hi rod,
In reply to your comment-the year would be about1951+-1year.
later on whilst still a teenager I often returned to BM on my pushbike when with friends we would go through the extensive cellars to our disappointment no bottles of booze. When climbing into the main house, the wing running upto the clock tower it was absolutely amazing. A long corridor on the left side
every door opened in to a bathroommost still had thier furniture complete with fittings-yes they did look like gold or highly polished brass but by laws of nature if brass they should have been corroded. The
doors on theright side were bedrooms some still had the odd bed or matteress strewn about. why was so much goods left did the owners just pck thier bags and walk away.time period abt 1956-59. imagine my
look of dismay when I took my to young sons to see the place

My uncle has recently sent me a concise version of my maternal Grandfathers diaries that he kept from 1921 until his death in 1993. There are some amazing facts and happenings in his lifetime as you could probably imagine, given the timescale.

But the bit that got me excited, was that between 1927 and 1929 my grandfather worked at Bayon's Manor as an electrician, while working for Northern Electrical. He was on the mighty wage of 1s1d per hour. After he had finished, it seems that the powers that be at BM had a word with his bosses at Northern Electrical, and got his wages upped to 1s6d per hour. This then enabled him to update his motorbike and bought a 1924 Raleigh 500cc Rudge m/c for £15. It seems he and his brother did a lot of biking, but then again back in 1929 petrol was 7.5 pence per GALLON!!!!!
