Crystallized angelica….. now you’re talking. I too grow a mass of the stuff, like a forest it is and increasing every year. My own concoctions vary but most are quite a pronounced angelica flavour and it has to be said, an acquired taste. Personally I love it and will happily eat small pieces on their own but it’s also good in fruit cake mixes etc and I have occasionally used the syrup as a cordial to dilute.

The Reliant Robin episode is all but forgotten Neville in light of your having grown woad…. there are cart loads of points there. I must include you in our Japanese shibori tie dye club

p.s. have you ever ventured into Little Brother’s site? You should take a look, we’re always waffling on about herbs and all things culinary…… photography etc, it’s another fabulous site from the Collins stable.

“I’ve tried mixing my own”…reminds me of when we were children; we used to put loads of rose petals and lavender in water and probably other ingredients too - not too bad when first mixed but after a day or two when wild yeasts and decay had done their bit it was a rather scanky brown mess.

On a serious note, I have grown my own angelica and crystallized it - worked OK but rather mild. I suppose the comercial stuff is dried more first to concentrate the essences. Another ‘homebrew’ is dandelion coffee; that worked well and is a unique flavour. Similar to chicory, but different. My friends thought I was mad when I sowed a neat row of dandlions on purpose!

You could take a lifetime looking for the definitive essence …. but let me tell you it’s Chanel Of course frankincense and myrrh are all very well and I like them both and lord knows (by that I mean Daniel Craig) I’ve tried mixing my own but they just smell like fruit bowls or vile cold cures.
