This is an old post, but I hadn't heard about Amazon acquiring ABE.com. I found it when I searched for information relationship between ABE.com and Amazon.

I have been a customer of ABE.com for years and all of a sudden my purchases are being cancelled as "unable to process payment." I checked with my bank, even changed credit cards, to no avail. Finally found got a message from ABE that "due to our relationship with Amazon.com Inc. we are unable to accept Cuban orders at this time."

I am Canadian, citizen and resident; my credit card is Canadian; and the delivery addresses have all been Canadian. I happen to be in Cuba temporarily, but can in no way understand how that makes mine a "Cuban order."

I will be ordering direct from booksellers from now on, I guess. Probably UK and Canadian ones, if the Big Brother reach of the US blockade also extends to the little guys.

Miles
some salient points - I fear we already have the book equivalent of Tesco with AZ now !
They wield agreat deal of power, indeed recently they were removing the BUY button from some authors books because the publishers would not sell them to AZ for even less money than they do already !

Rod,
I imagine the fear for independant bookdealers is that if they are not signed up to Amazon they will struggle to get customers to their sites because they will view Amazon as a 'one stop shop' and may refrain from searching further afield.
Personally I don't like the 'new and used' option, I used Amazon because I wanted a newly published book without going to the high street and pre-ordering it there. I suppose I don't want to put another nail in the second hand bookshop coffin either, the last thing we need is another Tesco/WalMart.
