Am I an Average Woman ~ What’s the Average Woman Like ?
What characteristics and attributes does the Average Woman statistically have.
Here’s a very interesting list of facts compiled from a huge and varied number of statistics.
Read on to find out if you are an Average Girl or what one is like !
What is the Average Woman Like ?
Currently aged about 41 with a life expectancy of 81 - 5 years longer than a man
She stands at 5 feet 4 inches in height and weighs in at 11 stone and 2 pounds
She wears size 16 clothes and her vital statistics are: 36 D-Cup bust, a 34 inch waist and 41 inch hips
Her waist in 7 inches fatter than her grandmother’s was
Aged 41 years she will already have consumed 68 years worth of fat
She will wear a bra at least half a dozen times before putting it in the wash
Girls spend almost 2 years of their lives apply make-up
Thinks the most important things to look for in a man is financial security and social standing
Look at men’s eyes and bums first
Will walk to America and back in mileage terms pushing a vacuum cleaner in her life
Over a lifetime will spend nearly £40,000 ($64,000) getting her ‘hair done’
As with the men there are plenty more but this is a fair representation.
What struck me most was the difference in opinions men and women had of themselves.
Most men described themselves as being ‘average looking’ and reasonably happy with their bodies but would like to lose a few pounds.
Their most desirable body change would be ‘a six pack stomach’
Whereas the ladies seem to suffer from an almost self loathing - they target specific areas of their bodies as with dismay, whereas men seem to take it overall.
The statistics show an almost clinical obsession with their looks with an overall theme all being weight based.
What confuses me most is that given the importance, in their minds anyway, of this issue why do:
Nine out of ten regularly diet then give it up
Eight out of 10 lie about how much they eat
Half admit to having eaten an entire pack of biscuits in one go
etc etc
Overall I find the difference between the sexes very interesting and especially one aspect which occurred to me whilst reviewing all the results was how the sexes are converging with women heading toward more masculine traits and the men toward more traits traditionally presumed feminine in nature

Rod,
Very interesting, weight seems to be a real issue in both camps doesn’t it? With men’s attitude to weight does that make them carefree and slob like or realistic and content. Now there’s a question!

the weight issue was of interest to me in how they actually perceived themselves - men very much different to women.
The female lists were like batting lists of things they ‘hated’ about themselves:
The skin under my chin, the back of my knees, my arms, my stomach etc etc - from really small things to the obvious ones I wa amazed at the detail.
The men however just said they were overweight or a bit fat, had a beer belly.
Shows a basic difference I think
Cheers

Interesting…makes me feel quite good about myself, as according to the stats I’m far from average!
Of course, the first thing I need to bear in mind is that I’m quite a bit younger (16 years) than average, so I may well have cought up with some of the other average stats by the time I reach average age! I do have a theory that these stats will be largely dependent on the generation you come from, as the average will change quite a lot over the years.
But I’m taller, lighter, wear smaller size clothes and have smaller stats than average (including smaller boobs, but that’s probably to do with weighing less), and judging from photos am not really any wider around the waist than my gradmother was at my age! Although I refer to my maternal grandma, my paternal grandma is a little dot of a lady and always was. Does it matter which grandma I choose??!
I wash my underwear more frequently than average (the average stat made me go ‘eeew’!)
But importantly, and probably unlike generations before me, I am financially independent, which probably explains why ladies of my generation (I suspect) would not necessarily rate financial security and social standing as important in a man as the women of previous generations did. Ms Average, by the sound of things, belongs more to my mum’s generation, where these things are important. If you’re not independently financially secure yourself, of course financial security’s going to be a priority in what you look for in a man.
As for the weight issue, I’ve never understood this obsession with particular parts of the body. Overall I’m not in bad shape, could probably do with losing a bit of podge around the middle, but don’t hate any particular part of my body. But I know plenty of women who do hate their stomach/legs/knees/elbows/boobs and it makes me sad. Logic says if you hate it that much, change it, if nothing (barring plastic surgery) will change the bit you hate, stop wasting so much energy worrying about it.
I will confess to spending what to most men seems like an obscene amount getting my hair cut & coloured, but I can afford it so why not? And I love makeup as much as the next woman! Although I doubt I spend the average time applying it, I value my sleep too much to get up earlier just to put more slap on!
It’d be very interesting to read a few other women comparing themselves to the average stats, and seeing if my generation theory has any firm groundings. Also I’d be very interested to read the Mr Average stats, and have a few men compare themselves. I’d bet they’d actually be nearly as shallow as the women!

Apologies, I just discovered the Mr Average stats in the next post. That’s what I get for not reading chronologically!

Juli,
great comment and interesting additions to the debate.
You’re speaking my language with the ‘generational’ side of things, I would like to see a lot of the stats the publish being broken down into age groups.
Things like divorce rates for example, those stats are being skewed higher by people of my parents generation - what would be interesting is to know the rates for those in the middle alone.
Interesting what you say about being financially independent. I read a great article and survey a while ago about high flying career women in London.
None ‘needed’ a man, as it were, but what was interesting was their criteria.
They virtually all wanted a man who earned more money than them and was even further up the ‘corporate ladder’
Not one said they would consider a man who earnt only minimum wage !
All the best
