They were presumably blokes as Πυθαγόρας has a male ending as does Εὐκλίδης. Female names usually end in α, as in Ἡλέκτρα, or η, as in Εὐρώπη.

I worry that we might lose Rod with a subject like ф … I doubt he gave it much thought when planting out next season’s root veg for instance. You’re hopeful aren’t you… Rod’s idea of the Divine Proportion probably has more to do with Pamela Anderson than the study of placement within a mathematical grid?
