I was selling 2 to 3 books a day when I first joined Abe last summer. This past week, I have received no sales, even though I have added several hundred more books since joining. I'm not certain why sales just stopped.

Chris,
I was on it from the very early days and I can honestly say I don't regret leaving at all
Best of luck with business

I was about to sign up this morning, but decided against it after reviewing the fees. I like their site design, navigation is easy, but its just not worth it. That's a shame they charge so much for relatively no reason. After calculating a bit, they would be hitting me for an average of 15-20% on books less than $100. Really? That's outrageous, not even an auction house hits you for that kind of a %. The only books worth selling are my most expensive books, and guess what? Those are the ones that sell less often, so I would end up loosing big. It's sad, but even eBay beats AbeBooks.

Hi Andy
thnaks for the comment and welcome to the site.
Sorry to hear of the problems.
I myself was on abe in the 1990s but left, on a matter of principal, when they forced use to use their card facilities instead of our own.

The site used to be fantastic but they got greedy and gradually ruined it.
Biblio is a more friendly site but the sales it generates are poor (sadly) that said I did have an enquiry on a £250 book this morning via Biblio but that's the first in quite a while.

Being in the UK I don't really know about Powells I'm afraid

All the best

Have just quit Abe books. They have a policy, buried in the small print, that they will not re-imburse more than the outgoing shipping cost on a return. In my case a book supposedly in new condition was inproperly packed and arrived (very) damaged. Seller required return, Abe indicated should be shipped with Tracking facility. Cost exceeded origonal shipping, by $7.00 Neither the seller or Abe will re-imburse this amount. Happy to lose me as a customer. Strange logic when a seller error and damaged merchandise results in no product and the buyer out of pocket. Powells in Portland has a good reputation and great stock, does anyone else have experience with them ??

Hi Jack
thanks for the info and welcome to the site.
I don't understand why they keep messing around. All they really need to do is clean up the listings on the main site, get rid of the sellers who give the site a bad name and drive more traffic to the site via advertising etc.

Regards

They've launched this low-cost discount service now called GoJaba to do the initial new market penetration at a lower cost to acquire each customer. The theory, I guess is once they've established themselves with this cheap low cost service, then they'll bring in the full-service site. I heard from one of their reps that the high US dollar really hurt them.

I agree and the jokers they have in customer service either 1. are rude and want to get you off the phone in a hurry or 2. such robots that they send you a form reply to your carefully crafted questions. I'd go with alibiris.com or amazon.com or even barnesandnoble.com

A report from a leading dealer who has been on abebooks for many years has come in.
He has not sold a single book on abe for 3 monhts now!

It is too early to start sounding the death knell - but for those not selling crap or text books things are looking all but terminal.

If know different, or concur, let us know and post a comment
